Assyrian Army

Hi There
Going to start painting up a 25mm Assyrian army. But to save money do you think it would look very bad if i used 1/72 plastic Chariots. The foot and Cav will be metal but the numbers of chariots I think required would make it more afforable to use plastic.

Well 28mm figures are, I think, something like 1/56 scale ...

I know these are not ancients but the difference between 20mm and 25mm is enormous. It's roughly the difference between somebody who's 5' tall and another who's 6'2".

I see the problum must rethink and see what I can do. Might just have to downsize to 15mm for this army.

Dave - the better plastics - Zvezda, HaT and Orion come out at 23/24mm compared to current 28mm metals, they are smaller all round. Have a look at the Orion web site for their Assyrian seige machines. Not sure if anyone makes these in metal for 28mm?

Your other option is simply use plastics on 28mm bases which is quite common for DBA. Between the 3 manufacturers above you do get a good selection of animated poses for the later Assyrians.

Dave,

If I remember I will bring my Hat and Ceasar 1/72 plastic Assyrians for you to look at on Sunday.

There is no way that you can mix 1/72 and 28mm in the same army, they will just look silly. That said if you don't want to pay the huge sums required to get 28mm chariots (and to be honest a lot of 28mm metal infantry) just load up on Hat plastics, they are actually rather nice.

That would be nice of you I could do with looking at them in the flesh so to speak. I was thinking of going for all plastic Assayrian army just cause £8 to £10 a chariot is a bit steep considering the number required. The other factor was could these painted and based plastic figures be used at Comps such as Challange or Britcom and other events throughout the year.

Absolutely, I can imagine Assyrian armies with 20 chariots so getting them for less than £10 each would be good

Several people have already used 1/72nd plastics and not had any issues. Dave Ruddocks French are plastic, almost all of Dave Allens armies are plastic as well.

Adam Worsdale has been using soft plastic Mid Republican Romans this year as well - and nice they look IMO.
