Roman archer support

Post by Gallienus »

Guys,

For Dominate Romans, might there be an option to make the 3rd rank - archers - medium foot so that they can shoot at foot opponents as well as mounted?

I might be wrong but i thought all third rank bow could shoot at both foot and cavalry is'nt it 5 for foot 6 for cavalry.

Dave,

Only a newbie! You might well be right! I was sure I read in the rules that only med archers can shoot at both horse and foot under the overhead shooting rule.

I am pretty sure your right, only Med Ft can shoot at both. LF can only shoot at foot. But, I dont have a book in front of me so I could be wrong.

For any questions like this, the answer is that you're free to do what you want in your own games. If you think a certain interpretation is historically correct, then go for it. In a friendly game, just run it by your opponent and see if he doesn't mind.
Bear in mind that in this case if the bow are MF then they must be in the 2nd rank, so you can only have one rank of legionaries in front.
However, if by your question you mean something like - will the authors change the lists because I want to have MF bow supporting legionaries ? - then the answer is clearly going to be no. Remember the lists have been put together to reflect what the authors feel is the correct interpretation of the available historic evidence.

While I understand the logic behind this... if thats what your going to do, then why bother with the rules at all?

Do what you want to have fun, but I have never really understood the "play how you like when your with friends" bit. It just makes for problems and confusion when you play someone who is thinking you will be using the main rules. Even worse is when you get enough people together who use home rules and then they want to run an event. Pity the folks who show up to that without realizing what they are walking into. I have been that guy a few times with other games, so I generally advocate using the rules as written whenever possible.

Very true, with both good and bad results...
