Best optional troops for Late Republican Romans?

Post by Robert241167 »

Hi guys

I'm quiet new to FOG and see the Late Republican Romans have a variety of optional troops.

Can you let me know which you prefer and why so I can decide which may suit my army.

Thanks

Rob

Since they have such a hard core (corps?) centre take the LH to slow the flanks while the centre grinds the enemy away

But don't get into close combat with them, and don't get close to large numbers of enemy shooters.

As if you do you will have lost half your army before the enemy centre has been ground to dust

Having used this army a few times, I tend to take 3-4 units (depending on points) of LI. Used correctly these can slow your opponent and allow the legionaries to focus their attack on one area of the line.

I also take the unit of elephants. Kept shoulder to shoulder with the legions, they are a tough unit and cause a -1 on CTs.

Cheers
Paul.

My FoGipedia has a Late Republican Romanpage with tactical tips on picking and using the army. There will be some battle reports up there using it hopefullly by next week as well.

Its set up as a Wiki so if anyone wants to add anything to what I've put on this page, you can do so by first visiting this page - its as easy as writing a post on this forum. 8)

I won one of our local tournys with LRR and took one group of elephants, and one BG of Ligurian foot from the optional troops list.

Everything else was taken from the core troops. If you want I can post the army list here.

If you keep the elephants covered on either side with the legions, they do very well and you don't have to worry about them getting shot up before they get intio combat.

What are good figures to use for Thureophoroi?

Will Greek Hoplites do as I am just picking what is available on Ebay.

Cheers.

Figures labelled as thureophoroi.

No, because Greek hoplites used a large round shield, wheres thureophoroi used a long oval shield (thureos), after which they are named.

The illustration on P.53 of Immortal Fire is incorrectly labelled. The figure is a hoplite not a thureophoros. Unfortunately it got inserted after the final proof-reading.
