Berlin 1945

Post by bluboy1979 »

This scenario appears to be near impossible despite getting to it with a really strong group of troops. Tried numerous different strategies but always get overrun and defeated.
I know this is what historically happened but anyone have a strategy that works ?
My forces are able to hold the Russians back for a while but run out of fuel or ammo then get killed.
Which units are key ? I am setting up strongpoints around the key objectives with 88's backed by artillery and mg42 teams and they have a ring of tigers and Panthers backed by artillery in front !
I try and hold the airfields for a few turns to keep my planes flying but this appears pointless for the minimal gain.

I retreat between the rivers except for the SE airfield complex where I form a hedgehog type defense to protect both airfields. Don't let the Russians crowd the airfields with troops or the aircraft will not be able to fuel or will only partially fuel. It is easy to defend the rivers as the Russians come in waves to the eastern side and the western side, and then they come from the south and north in another wave. Most aircraft come in from the northeast so put all the Flak there. If you have 35-45 units you should be able to hold unless they are weakened, weak experience, or inferior unit types. Tigers, Panthers, and armored ATG's can smash the Russians on the rivers, but if you lose a city hex it is better to retreat to a new position instead of trying to attack a SMG infantry in the city. Abandon the western airfield and all the aux units as delay fodder. You'll have plenty of time to retake cities when the Russians are gone.
Search the main PzC forum for Berlin, and/or Berlin Redux for more advice.
Berlin Redux is the next scenario, and you may want help on that as well.
There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.

While I agree initially it looks terribly difficult at first there are a number of tricks to doing it that actually make it and the redux relatively easy. There are a couple of threads entirely devoted to it which go into details.

shouldnt this thread be in a different sub-forum?
