Britcon 2018...
With Britcon featuring Medieval this year and a deadline set for use of Book 3 of the lists it's highly possible we'll still be using the original lists. So what happens about polearms?
The draft of V3 included an option for players to decide whether to use heavy weapon or polearm. Don't think the published rules include any such option...

Re: Britcon 2018...
Hi Chris - Terry is hopeful the new V3 Book 3 will be out in time for Britcon. If it's not then we'll be using the existing lists which sadly do not have polearms.
I say sadly because the lists I am considering will almost certainly feature polearms in their revised versions.

Re: Britcon 2018...
Seems a bit of an oversight, given we're playing with V3 and the draft included an option for polearms when using the original lists. Comp organisers have made allowances for the new points values for superior. Why not polearms?I say sadly because the lists I am considering will almost certainly feature polearms in their revised versions.
Re: Britcon 2018...
Due to interpretation of who gets polearms. Not all heavy weapons get converted.ChrisTofalos wrote:Seems a bit of an oversight, given we're playing with V3 and the draft included an option for polearms when using the original lists. All superiors cost more, so easy to check. Not all heavy weapons are polearms.

Definitely not an oversight Chris. It was given full consideration.Seems a bit of an oversight
Without a confirmed release schedule we do not know if Book 3 will be out in time. And as there are no polearms in the existing V1/V2 lists it is impossible to predict which will remain heavy weapon and which will change.

So what's wrong with allowing players to choose which type to use, just as the drafts allowed? Surely, using all the features of the new rules is better than barring what is an interesting new addition?Without a confirmed release schedule we do not know if Book 3 will be out in time. As I'll probably be using some sort of pike army it seems odd we're arguing about something which would help the other!

Re: Britcon 2018...
Who is to say which heavy weapons become polearms and which don't? Being wargamers we'd all choose the option that suited us the best with no consistency of approach. So what's wrong with allowing players to choose which type to use
We will be using all of the features of the new rules. Polearms feature in several 'in period' lists from Book 2. Players are free to choose them if they so wish.Surely, using all the features of the new rules is better than barring what is an interesting new addition?
Hopefully this will prove to be a pointless discussion if the new Book 3 is published in good time.

I'm not so sure. If the blurb for the list says "polearms" or "halberds" for certain of the troops wouldn't that be sufficient?

Sadly not. We've already seen some troops in Book 2 that are described as having Polearms remain as Heavy Weapon. EG Song Chinese.

I asked Terry today and sadly we do not have a release date for the 3rd book. As an aside I asked him about the polearms / heavy weapon question for Britcon and he agrees with our approach.
