Major Flaw

A new title from Shenandoah Studio, the creators of Battle of the Bulge: March to Glory! Europe, beginning of the XIX century. Born from the ashes of the Ancient-Regime, the new French Empire is putting the old continent on fire, spreading the seeds of the Revolution

Major Flaw

Post by PnzGren »

Hi All, It is a fun game and does require strategy, but a major flaw makes it unplayable for me. The interaction between the Column formation and the Line formation is fouled up. The Column formation gets a bonus when meleeing the Line formation, as it should be. But the Line formation gets a - 2 attack against line formation! Line formation (especially the Brits) could destroy thick columns of troops. The Line formation should get a bonus when firing on columns!

Also, squares in the open can be broken with no problem. I can live with that, but the line formation shooting thing makes the game unplayable for me.

Needs fixing.

Hi PzGrn,

thanks for the feedback but I'm not clear what the issue is. Columns are easier to shoot than lines which is exactly what you're asking for?

Sorry I confused you.

In this game, the Line formation shoots with a - 2 damage when firing at a Column formation. The Line formation can't hit a Column formation in the open (sometimes).

In history, the Line formation was a shooting formation and was deadly to a column. The column formation is a melee formation and could break a line through assaults. In this game the line formation is reduced to impotence. It is unhistorical and totally illogical.

I hope I have made it clear.

That's a bug - I'll ask the team to check on it. Lines should do more damage to columns.

I don't think it is a bug. The rules state as much. They just got it backasswards. thanks for looking in to it.

Well its not supposed to be like that so for me its a bug :) I suspect the manual just copied what the game showed. Anyway we'll get it fixed.

There are a few other things that it might be good to look at
* Make cavalry far less effective against squares.
* Adjust the cavalry to make them more reliant on the infantry breaking. have them only do morale damage unless the infantry retreats and then do lots of kills, possibly even auto destroy the unit.
* Make artillery reaction fire to enemy approaching them.

Not a major flaw, but a bad first impression. The battle of Austerlitz shows the date for Waterloo! That needs fixing.

Hi guys,

Than you for the feedback.
You are right, the line needs to be more deadly when attacking columns formations.
We will patch it in a few days.

technically speaking, there was no melee in open terrain, columns or no columns.. Charges were typically delivered in lines, not columns. French doctrine was to march in column, then before charge deploy to line and charge. Charging in column only happened in places where it was impossible to deploy in line - mostly during Spanish campaign. Famous last charge of Imperial Guard at Waterloo was delivered with 5 battalions marching into contact in columns, then deploying into lines, exchanging musket fire with Dutch units in first line for about 15 minutes, then charging through them and routing them, just to get countercharged on flank by battalion of British guard, and cavalry from the front.. Middle guard retreated, while three battalions of Old Guard in second line formed squares and hold off charging cavalry and marched off the battlefield..
