Field fortifications and camps

Post by Petronius »

I have two small queries that the rule book doesn’t completely cover.

The first concerns Field fortifications. My example has six bases set out with a frontage of four with a vertical side piece at either end (like an inverted staple). Now if these were left unattended and (at a later stage of the battle), an enemy BG lined the outside front edge only to be charged (from the inside direction) by a BG belonging to the fortification owner. Which BG (if any) would get the benefit of the FF factor?

Query 2. An unfortified camp is sacked upon contact by an enemy BG but does this still pertain if a defending BG is within the camp or do defenders need to be routed before the camp falls and the looting can begin? Does it make a difference whether the defending BG is lining the contacted edge or just somewhere within the camp?

Only troops in contact with the defined rear edge(s) of the FF count as defending them (p. 121). If no troops are in contact with the rear edge(s) of the FF, then no troops receive the melee + for defending them.

In FoG, camps and BGs of troops are two separate things (pp. 20, 22). An unfortified camp is considered to be undefended, so it never has any troops inside. A fortified camp is considered to have troops defending it, but it is not a BG. Conversely, a BG protected by field fortifications is not a camp.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Scott

You can't put a BG inside a camp
