Mystery Flanking Force

Now this has happened to me a second time. I've created an open battle against AI, and have NOT pressed the flanking force button, and lo and behold an enemy flanking force appears midway through the battle. What gives?

The battle option is for you to send a flank force versus the enemy. In open battle there is a small chance the AI will try to outflank you.

Im not sure but I think in MP there is no chance of a flank force in "open battle" ( I have never seen it happen..)
