Second artillery hero.
When I look for a second hero for my Range+1 units, I'm torn between farming for another range hero or an attack hero. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My best double heroed unit is my +1 Movement/+3 Att 30cm Nebelwerfer.stormbringer3 wrote:When I look for a second hero for my Range+1 units, I'm torn between farming for another range hero or an attack hero. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I fully expect to get him a 3rd hero as he has close to 1400 kills in my 1944 Masntein Playthrough

I prefer for towed: Range - Move - Attack and other: Range - Range/Attack
Re: Second artillery hero.
If I have a Range +1 artillery hero I want the second one to be +3 Attack. I can downgrade the unit to a 7.5cm, and it would help with my efforts to stay below the cap.

Re: Second artillery hero.
The 75s (and 25 pounder) are often overlooked, but are quite good, especially for defending against soft targets. I'd normally prefer a 105 as the extra range would normally be a bigger benefit, but asI don't use soft cap I have one less thing to consider when choosing equipment.
Range beyond 4 looks good but doesn't often add that much value, and I'd much prefer 3A, move (only for towed) or 3D in that order for a range hero gun.

75mm is a great support weapon for paras, if the primary target is an airfield at which to land them. A +1 Move and +1 Range with some overstrength make them formidable in the rear areas supporting fallschirm.
Range/Move for towed, and Range/Attack for S/P is my preferred choice of hero pairs.

At what point does it become possible to transport 75mm by air? I tried on Oslo for that NW airfield/city, but couldn't get it on a Ju 52.AnalogGamer wrote:75mm is a great support weapon for paras, if the primary target is an airfield at which to land them. Is it a mod or just later on in the base game?
Fallschirmjagers would be a lot more workable with some light artillery support.

Re: Second artillery hero.
It worked in the vanilla campaign, so it should in the GC. It may be a question of time. Possibly a few months more. You cannot take a truck with it, but the game asks if you wish to discard transport. Check to make sure you have an air transport available.
I am making 120mm mortars for just this purpose. Para support.

How do you make sure that you have air transport available?
Thanks.

There comes a time on every project when it is time to shoot the engineer and ship the damn thing.

Re: Second artillery hero.
You can't. Air, rail & naval transport is scenario dependent. To see how much you have available, mouse over the embark/disembark button in the upper right.

Re: Second artillery hero.
Also, I believe that the 75mm needs to be loaded onto a plane from an airfield. It might not be able to be deployed in a plane the same deployment phase that it is purchased. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the info, AG. I'll keep trying it to see if it works later on. I currently don't have much use for Paras since mine always seem to attract too much attention and get deleted, but some arty support could make them a viable unit.
When you say you are "making" 120mms, I assume that means you are creating a mod?
I've wondered why the devs didn't include something like the 8 cm Granatwerfer 34 or the Kz 8 cm Granatwerfer 42 in the game as a low-prestige cost infantry support weapon system, but a 120mm would fit the bill nicely.

Re: Second artillery hero.
Yes, it is a scenario that turned into a campaign that morphed into a mod. The 120s are just one of the reasons it became a "mod". The 8cm did deploy in fairly large batteries, but not large enough to really register here. 120s on the other hand, hurt. Effective enough that is was quickly put into use by the Germans when captured, and a German version came soon after.Spaznetz wrote:

Re: Second artillery hero.
I looked at my kills on my 3 30cm Nebelwerfer beasts that I am using in my Manstein playthrough.
3rd best or weakest 30cm has +2 Att/+2 Def Double Heroed and over 1200 kills, still expecting to get 3rd hero that I hope is either +1 Movement or +1 Range.
2nd best 30cm Nebelwerfer +1Range/+1 Movement Double Heroed and over 1400 kills...He used to be a 17cm +1 movement hero and when I received 2nd hero in Sevastopol and it was a +1 Range hero, I was excited to have a +4 range Powerhouse that I could fire at opponents 6 hexes away thanks to the +1 movement, but I found that they were not wracking up the number of kills I was hoping, that all changed as soon as I upgraded to a Nebelwerfer.
#1 bad boy that I would say makes the 2nd hero the best hero, with first being +1 movement, is my +1 Movement +3 Att 30cm Beast with over 1700 kills. (This boy is going to get a 3rd hero anytime now, and I hope it is either a +3 att 2nd hero or +1 Range which will increase its effectiveness even more.
Basically my favorite artillery to use is by far the Nebelwerfer's, they are absolute beasts and easy to decimate any soft target...I am the biggest fan of artillery, and find a healthy mix of various units the best to handle any number of offensive and defensive challenges.
I am going to start another thread for this topic.
