Recommendations for 1 day tourney format?

I'm planning a 1 day FoG tourney and plan to have three rounds of three hours using 650 pt armies. Since most people attending don't have a lot of FoG experience, am I being too ambitious, too conservative, or just right? I've allotted an hour for getting organized and an hour between each round for administative purposes, so there is room to stretch the rounds to 3.5 hours.

Just my impression is that events don't allways go to timing and here I think three games is too many. Drop it to two games and there'll be no worries about time stretching.

I have played a 1-day 650 pt 3-game comp and with players of varying experience, and it works out just fine. Is it 15mm? If so, limit table size to about 5x3 and restrict terrain choice to 1 + 1-3 pieces, or consider preset terrain. 2.5 hrs per game is fine and half an hour between games is plenty, maybe longer for a lunch break, but the 1 hour getting set time is probably just right.
People seem to shy away from preset terrain but personally I enjoy the challenge, especially cos the tables can represent battles through history and the terrain can look a great deal prettier. A compromise is a lucky dip from a range of predrawn terrains?

he did mention 3 hours which in a three game day would have you starting at 9 say and finishing at 6pm without time for collecting figures moving tables, but of course if you drop it to 2 and half hours on a 5 by 3 table at 650 points it will work as thats what Hammy is running this weekend in Manchester.

I would definitely recommend reducing table size to 5' by 3' for 15mm and 6' by 3' for 25mm.

If you can get 3 1/2 hours per game and have gaps you should be fine.

The first time I ran the 3 game format we had 16 players of varied experience (the comp was in May so only playtesters had much) and 75% of the games saw one army broken.

Well the tourney is 1 week away and I want to make sure I'm not forgetting anything. What materials do I need to bring as an organizer? I figure a board to record match-ups and results and scoresheets and VP calculators for each player. Players are responsible for their own terrain so I should probably have a template to check terrain size. Am I forgetting anything?

It's at the Minnesota Miniatures Gamers Association's November Recon, in Coon Rapids MN. THe MMGA hosts several one day gaming events (Recons) throughout the year. The MMGA is a loosely organized group of gamers in the Twin Cities. There are no dues, but participation at the events gets you on it's mailing list. Recon admission at the door is 7$ US for adults and 3$ US for youngsters. I've posted an announcement.

This may seem to be a silly thing to point out, but . . . remember to bring along everything that you would bring to play a game. Especially dice, measuring sticks, and cohesion markers. If you don't I guarantee that someone will forget them. A couple pens or pencils are always useful; so is watch or other timepiece. Oh, and the rulebkook. :D

You feally don't need a VP calculator for each player. All you need is a scoresheet for each game where players can record their names, army size and lost APs. The actual scoring can be done by you then you can be sure it is done correctly or at least consistently.

I agree with the full set of stuff to play idea and if you aren't commited to play yourself take an army just in case there is a no show or odd numbers for some other reason.

A copy of the player index is a good idea if you haven't already got one.

I wouldn't worry too much anout checking terrain sizes, that is something I have never seen done at any comp I have played in (and I have played in a lot).

When I am doing a manual draw I use one card (or piece of paper) per player. Record scores and who they have played on the cards then do the draw by sorting the cards by overall score and then checking to make sure there are no players playing someone they can't play. I can also lay the cards out on a table in order so players can see the scores without having to rewrite it all.

A camera might be a good idea as well.

And don't forget to either bring, or coordinate with those attending to bring, game cloths/matts.

Yes. Thanks for the tips. I am going to pick up a handful of colored chits. I need more just for my own use. The other day I had a battle where we used up all 10 of my disruption markers and had to resort to mis-aligning bases. I intend to bring 2 mats and my usual box of terrain. I am also bringing a couple extra armies.

BTW, one last thing, if you haven't printed the FAQ it is worth having a copy of that with you.
