Steppes Horse Army

Post by david53 »

Hi There
Thinking of going for a Steppe Cavalry Army, which would you say is ther best I was thinking of the Mongal because they could all be drilled and Superior both LC and Cav. Any ideas welcome.

Timurid. More drilled cavalry, well just more cavalry. If you want something to fight them as well take Moldavian/Wallachian.

Lithuanians, I'd have said .... altho it might be begging the question to call them steppe dwellers.

I played with Lithuanians once, not enough to get the hang of them, but here are two impressions:

1. Their cavalry are Bow* which make them worse in shooting than Bow when deployed in a single rank.

2. They have "full-service" light horse. That makes them better than any other LH at something, but is likely you will pay for a capability or two that is not used in a game.

The other question is--were you thinking about "shooty cav" or light horse or both. I think that Western Hunnic with lots of superior LH could be really annoying.

I like Timurid myself--but also think Ilkhanid and Tatar are good. Like Hunnic, both Mongol armies could be superior, and drilled (nice for the cav at any rate

Cheers,

Khurasanian

My favourite is the Khurasanian army so far but have also painted up some asian city state Cav/LH so these will form a western Turk ally for my Byzantines until the asian lists come out.

What are the advantages to the various horse armies? I played a short 'test' game with the Tatars, and found that I really didnt know what to do against an army of tough infantry (in this case, the English starter army from the rulebook)

Shhot them a lot and manouver so that when they charge you you can intercept with a flank charge, drop them a level and in your turn charge thier new flank with what you had to thier origianl front?

Depends what you want from them. Having Steppes as a terrain option is pretty much a requirement, after that you have to ask what Heavy Cavalry do you want apart from the vast swathes of Light Horse you get. Options at the moment are:

- Cavalry Bw Swd
- Cavalry Lance Swd
- Cataphracts

Personally, given that you shouldn't really be fighting with Light Horse (unless against Light Foot, which you will win anyway) then I go for the cheapest option available - i.e. LH, Bw at 8pts a chuck. One army with these is Parthians, which has Steppe and also has Cataphracts. Skythians and Seljuqs have options for the other lot, but there are loads of other armies... Some armies have Light Horse for fighting i.e. lancers - worth thinking about.

Tatars are all superior so tend to be a small army although very hard to kill. Skythian and Seljuqs are interesting cos they can widen their frontage by going for Unprotected Cavalry, which can be very useful against other Light Horse swarms.

Horses for courses - they are all slightly different
