Suppose in 5/10/15 years from now Slitherine is no longer in business, and the free 'World War II' base game download vanishes, how could we install and play OOB on our new computers in the future?
Heh. Good question, Spike.
That is why you always keep the last base installation program, and the last patch of the version that you prefer, in storage someplace. Then, you hope that some future version of Windows or Mac doesn't just completely disregard running something that old. You end up going to the forum for help and discover that nobody has been around for years or the forum itself has disappeared.
That is the nature of computer games and it has been for as long as I have been playing them. With such joy must eventually come the tears.
But in the meantime, we are all still here and OOB seems to be progressing, blemishes and all. So for now, take another look at this schematic. If you play 32-bit OOB, you would currently be keeping the 2.4.8 PC 32-bit installer. If you play 64-bit OOB, you keep the 5.2.1 PC 64-bit installer. You also store the corresponding PC patch to get you up to 5.2.9. For Mac, it seems to be just the one file which does everything.
