I cannot find an answer to this in the manual, and would appreciate any help as I have not figured it out.
What I want to know is the acutal process of attacking a unit to the command of a particular leader.
I think I remember there being a thread on this some time ago, but I could not find it.
Any help will be appreciated

Firstly, you can only do this during deployment, after force selection.
Then select the unit you want to switch, mouse over the general's unit (or any other unit of his command) and you should see a switch command icon.

Actually you attach leaders to units. You can move your leaders around units in their command once the game has started - this is an important tactic. You can attach a leader before or after combat but not if it is already in a combat, too far away, or part of a different command. It is probably best not to attach leaders to skirmisher units as they seem to die rather quickly. Note that some leaders have a wider area of effect than others so you may want to check this.
One question re the C-in-C: can he be attached to any unit after deployment, or do you have to create a command for him? I think it's the former.

Was there ever any attempt to have unattached leaders in the game? It might make command and control easier. I hear the computer rallies in the same way as the human player. In the games I play the computer is able to rally a lot more than me, especially from rout. Maybe this is because the human player is usually outnumbered, and feels the need to use all his units. Unattached generals would solve this problem.

That is probably the reason. It certainly isn't due to the AI getting a boost to their CT mechanism or RNG - there is none of that sort of thing in the game.Delbruck wrote:In the games I play the computer is able to rally a lot more than me, especially from rout. The game engine does not support this. In any case, in this era unattached leaders are a bit of an anachronism. Was there ever any attempt to have unattached leaders in the game?
The present situation gives another reason to keep a mobile reserve - somewhere safe for the general to await events, so he is free to join other units to rally them.
