Beginner Starting Battles

Post by TundraToad »

Hello

Me and a friend picked this up during the last Steam sale. We have played the tutorials and are going to start a PBEM. Please suggest some even, simple battles to get us going. When I am getting my ass kicked I would like to know it’s because I suck not because the armies are uneven or advanced tactics are required for a particular army.

Thanks

Just some thoughts:

All the Romans lists except the earliest Hoplite one added in the Immortal Fire expansion are very versatile. The Carthaginian and Seleucid army lists also give you a wide array of units to work with and are quite powerful. Most of the other Hellenistic Phalanx based armies are worth a look too if you prefer.

Also consider Gauls or other Warband armies like the Ancient British from the tutorial. The tutorial match up is definitely a fun one and you likely have a slight idea of the unit capabilities from running through it.

Generated skirmish battles as opposed to the Epic (historical) scenarios will be more balanced setup wise for PBEM play so start with medium sized skirmish battles.

Note terrain type and map makes a big difference as to how effective some of the trickier armies like the Saka/Skythian Horse Archers can be. In the right hands they can deal a lot of damage.

Consider playing mirrored battles against your friend (same match up up and terrain type but play the other side in one of the battles).

That ranking thread is potentially out of date.

Ex. I would pull all Warband lists from A Tier. They are definitely B tier or worse. Most Alexandrian and Successor state Pike lists should be pushed to A Tier. Indian lists with access to mass bows and mass elephants are potentially A+ Tier along with all horse archer armies.

Yes there was a warband nerf and therefore the Phalanx will perform better against them in the long run.

The problem runs much deeper than the ill advised Warband nerf in 1.02. They are fundamentally overcosted even when they had the +1 morale modidier.
