Can I change the size of a map already created?

Post by Moondogg »

Hi, I just started playing a few days ago, and got hooked on creating Campaign/scenarios. As the subject asks; can I change the size of a map already created?

I've done some research and I may include this in a scenario editor update:

In the scenario editor, press Shift+C and type "#crop XX YY xx yy" (no quotes) for changing map size. XX and YY are the new map size; xx and yy indicate how the changes are go be made in relation to the origin of the hex grid (where X=0 and Y=0; that is, the lower left corner of the map). If the origin is left unchanged (xx=0 and yy=0, then the changes will be applied to the top and/or the right sides of the map.

Here's an example of that. I took a 10 x 10 map and reduced it to 8 x 8 but I did not change the origin (click each image for full view):

The flag and gunboat are in the same hex locations as before because the two hex rows and columns were taken off the top and the right.

For other situations, the series of images in this PDF file may be instructive. Each sequence of three images is the starting map, followed by the command, followed by the resized map:

A couple of caveats:
1) "It is impossible to add 1 column of hexes on the left because of the way the hex grid is layed out. It always has to be an even number (2, 4, 6, ...)"
2) Resizing the map will wipe out place names and objectives. The scenario editor creates a folder named _crop in the same My Games\Order of Battle - WW2\Scenarios folder as the scenario you are working on and in this _crop folder is a copy of the former text file with place names and objectives information. However, the location hexes may have been altered according to whether and how you changed the map origin. Also, if you resize the map again, the blank information in your current scenario will overwrite the text file in _crop so the name and objective information will be completely lost unless you retrieve it and save it elsewhere each time.

So, it's complicated as you can see. Whatever you do, save your entire scenario folder someplace else before attempting to do this.

I've been wondering the same thing just yesterday, if map cropping was possible at all or if one had to create a completely new map template. Nice links also. THANKS.

Thanks! My first mod was 20 X 20 because I didn't realize I could initially change the size. This saves me from having to create a new scenario!

Note that you can't crop large portions of a map.
I've found that max 10 hexes will work ok.
