Mobil AA units.

Post by goose_2 »

OK I am into late game Campaigns now, and I am considering an upgrade to my mobil AA's.

So what is the Rate of Fire for the following:
Gepard
Mobelwagen
Ostwind
and
Wirbelwind

I am interested in having more hitting power, but am unsure which is the best option out of these 4. Any help is greatly appreciated.

All German AA has a ROF of 10 except the 20mm quad guns which have a ROF of 12.
The 20mm quad is there as a Towed Unit, or Mounted on a Truck SdKfz 7/1 and on the Wirbelwind.

Yup

According to the excellent Excel File Posted here recently

The 20 mm quad, the SdKfz 7/1 and the Wirbelwind are the only AA Units in the Game with a ROF of 12
Then there is a Soviet Unit SU 11 with a ROF of 11
All other AA Units of all Nations in the Game have a ROF of 10

I made this graphic mainly for my own use to illustrate vanilla hitting power, sorry if it's a bit simplistic by not showing ROF etc, but at least it does show the basic Attack Strength punch each unit can deliver.
PS- tactically I ALWAYS prefer having the mobile units as soon as I can get my hands on them because you can quickly rush them longer distances to any sector that's under air attack to give the attacking planes a bloody nose for their trouble..:)

Stupid question time: Why can't my flak unit fire at this P-51?
I'm sure there's a simple explanation but I'm racking my brain trying to think what it could be!
I've selected the flak and moved the cursor over the P-51, but if I now click to fire, it won't fire, it'll just move under the plane despite it having a firing range of 2, so what's going on?

whats the weather like? in bad weather no flak units will fire (unless the 88 is in AT mode).

While we are on the subject of mobile AA; is there any reason why I woud upgrade to the wirbelwind from my trusty Skfz7/1? if its rate of fire and attack are the same does it have other better stats?. Thanks for info.

@PoorOldSpike: I think you are in ground surface mode. Press TAB to switch to air mode and see if you can attack without moving the 7/1.

@hugh: Wirbelwind has better defenses (its GD and AD are those of PzIVG) and its tracked movement allows it to move more efficiently over frozen terrain. E.g., in frozen clear terrain, fully tracked vehicles move at 1 hex per move, while half-tracked vehicles move at 1 hexes per two moves. Thus, the Wirbelwind can move 5 hexes in frozen clear but the 7/1 can only move 2 hexes! Given the 2-range of both units, the 3-hex difference can be significant. TSPC37730 suggested downgrading a 7/1 to 10/4 to mitigate the movement issue for winter scenarios (if Wirbelwind is not available for purchase), which is worth considering. The 10/4 can at least move 4 hexes in frozen clear, though its AA is weaker (11 vs. 13) and its ROF is 10. Note that both 7/1 and 10/4 are in the same family so going from 7/1 to 10/4 costs 0 pp and going in the other direction costs 21 pp.

Thanks Ycloon and Hugh, the weather was dry and clear but it was hitting TAB that solved it..:)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As regards which Flak units are the most cost-effective, I conducted this series of tests to find out by wheeling up each unit in turn to have a crack at three different aircraft (fighter/tac bmbr/strat bmbr) and monitoring the pre-combat predictions with Ctrl-click (top pic).
The chart (bottom pic) looks a bit cluttered but is hopefully self-explanatory and I'll be doing similar charts for all other nations AA over the next couple of days..:)

Mobile AA is particularly good for protecting other expensive units. On the face of it, higher attack is often a bit more effective than higher rate of fire. However, if fighters or tac bombers are attacking ground troops, they get -5 low altitude penalty on defence. Because of the way the combat odds work (within about +/-5 of even each point makes a big difference, but more than 5 and the difference becomes less noticeable) the ROF can be more important than attack once you are at 3 or 4* because you suppress more of an attacker even if you don't kill quite so much. I usually hedge my bets with one or two mobile for defending spearheads, and one 88/128 for covering slower troops and for weakening powerful fighters or overstrength units befor emy small airforce has a go.
