To keep track of which armies I've played, I use a checklist, part of which is shown below. OK, this post is due to curiosity and also because I'm killing time before the turkey is ready
Is it weird that I only play custom battles?
Is it weird that I only play custom battles?
I have 75 hours on FoGII right now, which is a lot for me. While I have dabbled in a couple of campaigns, and did peek a look at a couple of the Epic Battles, my preferred mode is custom battles. I guess it comes from a lifetime of playing wargames, both computer and before that, paper and cardboard (AH, SPI, the usual suspects). I never did like replaying a historic battle with troop lists and positions preset. I really liked games, for instance the Total War series, where the battles occurred in a chaotic, non-preplanned manner. So when I play FoGII, I set up Custom Battles, using a new army each time. Well, unless I lost with that army in the previous battle, then I use the same army again and see if I can do better. I do fight against an enemy army that is geographically and chronologically appropriate. And I use Random maps. And I use the RISE OF AI mod by roguedjack.

Re: Is it weird that I only play custom battles?
No, I don't think you are weird at all, and I have almost the complete opposite preferences to you.
One of the beauties of this game is that it has so many different ways to play, Historical battles, random skirmishes, campaigns, multiplayer etc.
I don't think I have ever played a random skirmish, not through to the end anyway. I only play Historical battles and campaigns (both historical and sandbox). I prefer my battles to have some sort of context, and don't see the point of a one off skirmish, and I have always been fascinated with recreating historical battles. But, as I said, you are not weird at all, it's just great that this game can satisfy many different tastes.

I am the same. 90% of my games (solitaire and multi-player) are Custom Battles. Campaigns are good, but historical battles are best solitaire for the learning experience, IMHO.

I like the campaigns both historical and sandbox, and I like the Epic battles. I only play custom skirmish in MP. I like historically accurate combat most of all.
The OP mentioned Total War games which are my greatest love in life. I love the unlimited opportunity for wonderful wars.
