Successful x64 Clean Install

Post by jakemon »

I rebuilt my disks and was about to reinstall OOB just as the x64 bit version and kerfuffle became available. I waited a week, and just completed a successful new install on Win7 x64. I'm posting this quick report in Tech Support because I still hit one (known) issue, and the install / upgrade information is sadly scattered across the forums. Perhaps one of our excellent moderators could post a read-only sticky showing the existing community how to upgrade an existing installation.

* I began by downloading OrderOfBattle-WorldWarII-Setup64Release-v5.2.1.zip, extracting and launching the installer from a temp folder. I chose C:\Games\OOB for the install dir, and advocate best practice is keep your content out of the default Microsoft Program Files(*). That was my only installation customization, and I let the installer update DirectX. I did not plug in my US Pacific serial number here.

* Launching the game showed patch notes and splash screen were version 5.2.0, and there was an available auto-update. Launching the in-game update popped a small "Connecting" window with a rising sun background, and a progress bar that quickly went to 100% and stopped. I gave that 5 minutes, then attempted to exit the installer. Keyboard, mouse, and alt-tab were unresponsive, and I was forced to use the reset button on the box. I was able to interrupt the forced shutdown and gracefully close my other apps- avoiding the MS Crashed System Lotto.

* After a reboot, launching OOB showed a screen labeled "Patch 5.2.2 Fixes", and the splash screen showed 5.2.2 64bit. Everything looked healthy, and no DLCs present.

* Best practice allowed me to have local copies of my DLC exes, and their serial numbers. Installing DLCs is fast & trivial, but I launched the game after each to confirm it was available and basically healthy. I treated US Pacific as a normal DLC.

I stopped buying DLCs because I wasn't sure I wanted the Kriegsmarine naval changes, and I was becoming aware of the dislocation relating to upgrades and new content. I'm sympathetic to the developers from my own software career, but prefer to be on the trailing edge of technology now. It looks like I get the KM naval changes with this release anyways, so I'll probably buy the other items during the holiday sale- it is generally an enjoyable franchise.

First I'll probably go replay the earlier DLCs to see how progress has impacted them. Please note a clean x64 install has my blessing (and one curse), but I haven't yet taken a detailed look at campaigns and scenarios.
