Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
I feel that Alexander's regular Pike Phalanx should be above average in morale. This is due to the elan of fighting for Alexander. Later regular Pike should be average as they fought more in a mercenary capacity and would change sides after a battle or even change sides before a battle as in the case of Eumenenes. This is just a thought I would like to put out there.

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
i agree - i was surprised to see alexander's phalanxes at average , should be at least above average imho
Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
also agree. and also early diadochi (even tho the magic was lost when he died) phalanx should be equally capable, untill 300 bc at least
Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
I also think that the phalanx units serving under Alexander should be rated as Above Average or Superior.
Not sure the same is true of the early Diadochi though.

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
those mentioned troops who betrayed eumenes were alexander's veterans as far as i knowBombax wrote:I also think that the phalanx units serving under Alexander should be rated as Above Average or Superior.

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
Above average on the battlefield, below average when it came to loyalty?

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
Eumenes was a Greek general. His troops wanted a Macedonian general so they switched sides before the battle. For their (dis)loyalty they where sent to India...

After the battle - Gabiene - as Antigonos had possession of their baggage (containing much accumulated loot), wives and children.

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
From what I have read they actually betrayed Eumenes after the battle (Gabiene 316 BC), although I suppose you could argue that the battle would have continued on the next day, had not Eumenes been betrayed!pyrrhos wrote:Eumenes was a Greek general. It was Alexander's former Hypaspists, at that time known as the Argyraspides, that betrayed Eumenes. Antigonus had captured Eumenes camp during the battle, and the Argyraspides agreed to hand over Eumenes in exchange for their families and possessions. Their actual performance in the battle, which is what matters as far as this game is concerned, was legendary, they defeated the entire Antigonid phalanx for very little loss themselves. Superior would seem like the bare minimum to give them.

Re: Alexander's Regular Pike Phalanx
Thanks Nik, Must have had a senior moment. Could have sworn it was before the battle. From now on I will research my posts better and try to be more accurate. I have John Warry's Warfare in the Classical World and others as reference materiel.nikgaukroger wrote:pyrrhos wrote:Eumenes was a Greek general.
