Undersea Railroad to the Gilbert Islands?

Post by bru888 »

Guys, help me out here. I've been looking at OOB most of today and maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. (This is 5.2.2, by the way.)

I was nuking through the Marines campaign just now, checking on something, when my eye was caught by this line across the sea in the Gilbert Islands campaign (a.k.a. 6-USMC-TARAWA-MAKIN). "What is that?" I said.

It's in the editor, drawn across the map, and it's a railroad!

Does anybody else see this? Did I see it when I played through U.S. Marines? (Maybe I was still a youthful, inexperienced, over-eager OOB player back then, so I did not notice.)

Is it in there for a reason?

I guess it schould represent a geographical cut in the map (map scale /distance). But you're right, I don't recall it looking so sh***y in the previous version of the game. Maybe they changed a texture and forgot to place the new reference into the older maps.

Yeah, that may be it. In other words, the two islands are actually much farther apart and this is to indicate that but, at the same time, one can sail across the line as if it were nothing, no extra distance at all. Weird.

And no, I don't remember seeing it the first time through. I wonder if it was handled one way up to 4.1.7 and now we're seeing it differently for 5.2.2. No big deal, nothing to waste developer time on. I'm starting to like it, actually.

I've used sea-rails in invading scenarios to display beach boundaries. Quite harmless

LOL, yeah, I remember thinking the same thing. I think there were even exit hexes near this "border" but you could just fly or sail across it.
If I recall correctly the representation was kind of a dashed line in the previous version and definitely not in that lighter blue color.

It's kind of quirky, in a Jules Verne sort of way. I do like it!
