Panzerkrieg so far

Post by WarHomer »

I know there´s another thread regarding the actual DLC, but I also see alot of complaining, so I wanted to cover both.

I actually had a day off work Friday, so I was geared for the new DLC and (probably like many of others) was quite dissapointed that I couldn´t get it to work.

Luckily I had never finished the Moscow mission (as I rarely finish the last missions in the DLC´s because its goodbye to the core units after that and therefore seems a bit pointless in my mind), so that took up some time.

By afternoon Friday I was getting a bit frustrated to be honest, since there was no official fix and I hate wasting time with work arounds, so I tried the Steam approach (just activate/install WWII and Panzerkrieg on Steam) and it worked!

Despite a nieces birthday, getting a Christmas tree, two small kids and trying to keep the girlfriend happy, I still had time over the weekend for a bit of gaming (currently at mission 2), and must say that I´m very pleased with the DLC so far.

I was a bit disappointed with Burma Road (liked the missions, especially the first half, but too few units to choose from made it feel a bit repetitious and the specializations were a bit disappointing), but for now I got a bit of a Winter War feeling (which was one of my favorite DLC´s) and I´m loving it.

So to the point of this rant. Thank you, Artistocrats, for a (so far) very good DLC.

i for one never also got the work around working so feel for those who we all couldn't help over the weekend, as nobody likes to fail, even us, but the developers are excellent and i;m sure there are more than ready to get back on to the task and sort it asap, so again sorry for the issues and we all learn by mistakes, it happens and like everything in life, regarding games here, once a problem has been mentioned, a fix or solution is never that far away

Maybe I should specify what I love so far:

- New missions off course
- from the beginning a few new units to try out (love the nebelwerfer already) as this adds to diversity and replayability
- carry-over which also adds to diversity and replayability. It even spawns some thoughts in regards to a different tactic/approach to Blitzkrieg.
- challenging missions (I always play on Field Marshal)
- Not too many RPs since I have to really think about what to buy and finding that different approaches are feasible
- the feeling that this is just chapter 2 and theres still more to come

Please do post again mate as you work your way through, as I'm contemplating increasing my difficulty level, for more of a challenge I guess, as I found Panzerkeig a little easier than some previous content, but also to stretch out the value of the content until the next chapter.

I'm thinking it may also encourage me to go back and replay some of the older DLC as the dynamics may change quite a bit with difficulty.

I have enquired previously, but not yet seen a response (could be me), as to how exactly game difficulty settings works in OoB. Is it just units are made harder to kill or hit harder, or are RPs and CPs adjusted, or even AI capabilities adjusted?

Also is there now a unit carry over possible from Morning Sun to Rising Sun with the new core game update?

One of the key differences is the enemy (AI) unit strength -- it goes from 10 (normal) to 12 and 15 in higher levels.

For me the game is working like a charm, then again I've only been able to play the first three scenarios. Classic greatness, just like the first German campaign.
Haven't encountered any problems so far so thumbs up for that as well. ;) Did notice this DLC indeed seems quite a bit easier than Blitzkrieg, which is interesting. I remember especially the beginning of Blitzkrieg was hard. Maybe the new DLC became a lot easier because of the imported crew, and it's actually quite difficult if you start it from scratch.

I found that i actually wanted to buy the wurframen and StuG III (E?), and they did not disappoint.

The game kind of makes me feel as if im playing a better version of Panzer General, except there is no alternative history (in the spirit of Panzer general). That's not the direction it seems to be going at least, but one can always dream ^_^. Anyways I'll be trying my luck at Sevastopol next. The new DLC seems to be great so far anyways!

That's always good to hear. You can always crank up the difficulty if you need a challenge. But during beta, testers explained they struggled to afford the equipment they craved or was in the roster but kind of off limits. So credits were increased.
Anyways, enjoy and keep posting! :D

Hehe ;)

To expand on the difficulty - I'm not the AI expert here, but my experience is also that the AI tries to conserve weaker units, so with extra strength in the higher levels it is acting more agressively.

That is interesting. I guess it also means that with higher base strengths, the AI can 'rotate' depleted units from the front for recovery, with a greater chance that they survive withdrawal, if they are pulled out with more strength points remaining. This would require withdrawals based on a % of initial strength's rather than remaining points though I guess...

I now also wonder, does the AI get more resource points to reinforce units at higher levels?

Anyway, whether this is the case or not, as bebro says, if it fundamentally makes the AI more aggressive and dynamic, it fundamentally changes the scenario and tactics required.

I'm convinced and I'm pretty excited to increase my difficulty level next time around.
