The air unit is probably out of fuel.
From the manual page 66:

Air units require fuel to stay up inthe air. The number on the rightside of an air unit’s strength plateindicates the amount of turns itcan stay up in the air.
If an aircraftis selected, red movement markers indicate hexes that will be out offuel range in the next turn.
When the fuel indicator drops to 0, the air unit will lose strength each turn until it finally drops out of the sky and crashes.
To prevent this from happening the aircraft must land on a friendly airfield where it will be refueled automatically in the next turn.
Carrier-based aircraft can also land and refuel on aircraft carriers.

It's likely related to supply rather than fuel. Take, for example, this group of zeros and carrier. They appear normal at first:

There is a problem, however, in that one carrier cannot supply all of these zeros. Pressing the space bar shows that the carrier is short -17 supply units for this number of zeros:

So in the next few turns, the zeros' strength numbers turn orange/red to show that they are under-supplied (and therefore will not fight as well). Note that I have launched another fighter now:

In the next turn, that new fighter is now also orange/red to show that it, too, is under-supplied:

So, how did this situation happen in your game? Good question. I can only guess that the Japanese had more than one carrier and that another carrier has just been sunk. That would diminish the amount of supply that the zeros in flight had and therefore they are now under-supplied.
