Rallying/charging etc.

Rallying/charging etc.

Post by carll11 »

I have been playing for a week now, and am I enjoying the game immensely, and thought I would share a few comments on my experiences..

1) I have never seen a Roman Unit rally...I have however seen several warbands et al rally...weird 8)

2) Cavalry pursuits take the pi_s. Watching my cav. finally break a unit and basically depart the game for 4-5 turns, especially when its a leader whom should know better and, that 2 units would pursue one unit for 3-4 turns?....oooffff

3) elevation elevation elevation, it will give even an average unit the grit to stand up to even a superior unit for at least 4 turns one on one...putting inferior units on a hilltop/slope will give the AI pause, I have seen it consistently shrink away/pause from attaching a units even 2 levels below its own ranking because of a height position...

4) Refused flank- early on I too thought the Gauls for example were to resilient ( hence that thread), though they are brutes, if they 2 on 1 even a superior roman units, its touch and got for oh, 3 turns, then the Romans will wilt.I avoid that by not getting into any contact till I have engaged my overloaded Cav and light troop wing. I refuse a flank by back stepping, angling forward my strong wing, then engaging with a few 2 on 1's to my favor and charging like hell, the AI is not adept at not getting itself infiltrated and flanked by skirmishers and Cav. both hvy and light.

5) if possible pick a superior or highly superior unit, or any one that you're afraid of, concentrate at least 2 foot archers on it exclusively ( and a slinger would be great too), in 3 turns you will definitely have taken starch out of its sails and if it engages a unit even 2 levels below, wont be assured of success...

6) I have seen several enemy generals fall and, curiously, not once did the unit it was with break or disperse, even shaky units around it... :?

7) Question, I tried creating my own map, but cant figure out how to delete a tile I laid....and was wondering, in general, play wise- where are the bridges?

8- also, I agree with the thread on Epic battles as in being able to deploy them yourself....

I think I can answer this one: warbands rally normally. Roman units often won't rally in battles vs warbands because they often auto-break during such battles, and there is no rallying after auto-breaks. Of course any Roman units which don't auto-break will rally normally, but there might not be very many of them...

I've fought the Romans - AI controlled - many times, and I've seen Roman units rally many times.

The more "below strength" a unit is also affects the ability to rally.

Better quality should get bonus on rally. Sending a general to it will help as well.
