Starting a Gaming Group?

Post by Omar »

I asked in a few posts and got the general impression that the regular points for games was 600pts (based on the Starter Armies). The back of my copy of Eternal Empire said 700-800pts?

We are working on getting a group going at the local store, so need a standard to go by.

Should we go for one period? We have half the interested folks wanting ancient, a few wanting later period, and the rest of us somewhere in the middle.

With tables, the rules recommend a 6' X 4' table. Would 4' X 4' work? 6' X 4' seems a little big for 15mm.

Regarding terrain, I am having a hard time figuring how to make up good looking terrain that will work with the bases of models. I figure green felt for woods, grey felt for hills, etc would work ok, but doesnt look as impressive.

I heard Hammy has a set of quick tournament rules/standards? Where could I find those?

Table size and points used are, as you would imagine, linked. For 15mm 800 points and a 6x4 table works well IMO.

Hammy ran a 650 point comp earier this year on 5x3 tables which also worked very well - he reduced the number of terrain pieces by 1 as well.

For terrain can I suggest Miniature World Maker for good looking terrain - http://www.miniatureworldmaker.com.au/ - they ship round the world.

800pts seemed like alot to most of the guys looking at it after I was told that the starter armies were 600pts (or thereabout). Probably wont get it up beyond that anytime soon.

Whats a common point total for FoG events in the US, or does it just vary? 650 might work.

From what I have seen so far (from my GB perspective) 800 points is the standard in US competitions so far.

A realistic minimum size for armies is really the starter army of 600 points. One simple option to get people off the ground would simply be to build and play with starter armies on 5 by 3 tables.

Terrain can be done with cloth bases with markers on them but ideally plain felt is not good. You can spray paint a bit of colour onto felt and get something that looks a lot better. The miniature world maker stuff is very nice.

I am in the process of making some terrain bases out of irregular shapes of hardboard with the edges chamfered down slightly and then covered in the same way I do my bases (PVA glue and builders sand then painted with diluted brown emulsion paint then drybrusshed then clumps of static grass.

I'm a lazy gamer... Terrian for me.. Buy some 25 cent pieces of felt cloth and start a cutting! Different sizes and colors.. Hills i take a sharpie and make where the ridge line runs.. I do have some trees to put on the green felt to show it is a woods. I use gray sqaurish for villages.. I do have a village piece to put on the grey felt to show it is a town.
Po-tae-toes! Mash 'em up and put 'em in a stew!
