Suggestion of hotkey : next "unmelee unit"

Post by Splatsch »

Hi everyone ! First I must say that I'm really enjoying the game :)

Now, I found that one hotkey could be added. There's :
B – next unshot unit
N – next unit
TAB – next unmoved unit
And I think that a new hotkey who would enable to see the next unit that can fight in melee (like the one for "next unshot unit" but for melee combat) could be useful. Or maybe I simply didn't noticed it and it already exist XD

But well, if it's not already there, it's only a suggestion ;)
(and please forgive my bad english :P)

It doesn't exist, and you probably would not want to execute the melees in that order. If you aren't going to pick the order you may as well let them resolve automatically after you end your turn.

However, if you look at the Unit List (L hotkey) you will see that the units with outstanding melees to fight have this highlighted in red.

Well, the idea was too be able to check quickly if you haven't forgot a unit which could still fight in melee after moving/launching attacks with other units. When one unit just moved close to an enemy, there's no visual indicator of "I still can fight" or not (because not enough AP). And sometimes, when messing around the battlefield, it happens that I forget to ask to melee attack one or two units this way, that I thought "I must first see the outcome of this point and this point of battlefield before launching the attack of this one". I see they are "used" (= moved) but nothing say if they can battle or not.
But this is really only a suggestion, to improve the quickness and the "easy to use" of the game : it is already very well thought & done, I really don't want you to think this is a criticism or something like that ;)

Again, the idea is to quickly know without having to bring the unit list and scroll through it, I'm especially thinking about the epic battles. The "next unshot unit" is really handy in the end of the turn, and so it felt logical to me that the same thing could be made for melee.

Thanks for the really fast answer by the way :D

Fair enough. We can consider it.

I was thinking maybe a button which, when pressed, puts an icon above all units that still have full Action Points, as an alternative to Tabbing through them.

That is what the light/dark unit flags are supposed to indicate, sort of. If a unit has not been moved the flag is a light shade. When the unit is moved the flag turns much darker.

I must say, that I did not notice this when first playing the game, but since it has been pointed out to me I find it very useful to just scan across the battlefield to check which of my units still have light coloured flags, and therefore can potentially still move/fire.

Easy to miss units, though, on a chaotic battlefield.

But thats exactly why we avoided a plethora of icons and went for a relatively simple, block colour banner .. so that over a crowded, detailed, agitated battlefield the solid block of colour on a comparatively motionless banner would be more noticable and readable than half a dozen little icons. Its also why the majority of icons that appear under units are simple solid colours and shapes. So they contrast with the units and terrain without forcing us to use garish colours.

From the thread title, I thought you wanted a key to help units break away from melee combat. That would be useful if going to be wiped out or to let ranged units have a go at the enemy but maybe impossible in the fury of battle.

I agree with that : the work on visual informations is really great, the banner system -amongst other visual infos like animations, colored layers...- works very well for me and is aesthetic (which isn't often in games).
