First game in CNAW (remarks inside)

Post by Panzer »

Hi everybody,
I got the game on Monday and just finished my first campaign as Napoleon (i'm french, so forget typing errors please).

1st Impressions :
============
I was waiting for this game since a long time, and after CEAW, i was expecting this one. This game looks cool, and is different in many ways from CEAW (it's impossible to make a continuous and compact line of units like in CEAW).
A good Mix of units (inf, cavalry, artillery) is necessary.
It's more about movement and attacks must be well planned in order to win.

Upkeep is a good idea ! (you won't have tons of units, quality prevail ! police)

Politics (if i can say that), is not much elaborated. You're in war from the beginning until all your adversaries are dead :twisted:

2) Points who need improvements :
=========================

a) As far as i'm concerned, i never saw a modification of the look of my units despite my high (and advance technologie).

b) Many mistakes in the manual. Nothing about the combined arms (when infantry is attacked)

c) Supply : even when an enemy unit is completly surrounded, he got medium supply ? and it's difficult to predict what the supply will be for your own units.

d) I conquer Austria, a pop up appear and say that a must be careful cause Austria may revolt again, and to be aware of Prussia... That's nice, but when it's
the third time i quell a rebellion, it's a bit heuu ... too much

e) Very few french generals : There are around 7 generals and 2 admirals to be bought. That's a bit too short ... There must have been about 18 great Marshall during the various historical campaign. I understand that all of Napoleon's Marshall aren't there to buy but Marshall Berthier is really missing (he was the best of Napoleon's Marshall).

f) When a major country surrender, all the units invading the capital are send back to your pool... in case of Russia, that's a bit far !

g) When you conquer a major capital and there are no space left to put your unit, they disappear from time to time.

i) The look of the units doesn't change : no "real" dramatic change was made to the look of the Napoleonian's army during this period ... but a just a few colour change maybe, or a different hat would have been nice.

j) There seems to be some problem with the A.I. concerning the naval Units.
Ai does not think to be necessary to repair their damaged ships.
Following the Trafalgar Battle, my french flett was destroyed but :
- English ships didn't repair any of their ships
- My remaining Dutch ship of the line destroyed all the wounded english ships
- 15 Turns afterward, France was the only master of the sea with only two ships of the line ...

k) Experience : it's nice to introduce the notion of experience for units. It will drop where you reinforce them. For example i have a unit with 100 experience points (level 4), this unit reinforce 5 strenght. Expereince is now 50 for the unit.
I think it's a bit to drastic. Give it a 25% bonus cause old warrior make it easier for the new recruits. (which should make exp = 63xp for this case. (50xp loss * 25% bonus = 12.5)+50 = 63xp).

l) AI and Artillery :
Ai does not seem to buil Artillery units, and generals ... is it a bug ?

m) Neutral countries :
Why doesn't neutral countries build units ?

n) the russians doesn't seem to want to take back the horse farm on their homeland... (with no garrison on it)

That's all Folks (i was a bit long)

Best regards

:wink:

Other points (Grand Campaign):
=======================
a) When Austria is defeated, Russian units doesn't move anymore. A I just stay near moscow and build infantry units.
b) Ottoman empire got two capitals, if you take Constatinople alone, Ottoman empire surrender despite the fact that they still got Cairo.
c) No matter how many units garrison France, England will never risk a landing (D-Day) anywhere in europe.
d) When disbanding a unit, a pop up window appear,and disappear ... blinking !

Hi again,

Just finished my third "Grand Campaign" as French, and i would like to give you some more feedback.
I know the AI problem are currently under development so i will adress other points.

1) When playing with fog of war on, even when in Line of sight, , neutral units are invisible, they became visible only when i declare war on them... :?:

2) Make the "Grand Campaign" even more Grand !
===============================================
I know that this game is not historically accurate, but in order to make a better grand campaign, you'll find my "wish list" :
a) Neutral countries :
The wurtenberg (or Rhin confederation) starts with no units and is very vulnerable from the English or Prussian. Put some Militia units in their cities to avoid this problem.
b) Saxony, Sweden (on the Allied side) and Wurtenberg, Denmark, USA (on the French side) does not declare war during the whole campaign. It would be great that these countries participate a bit !!! (1812–15: War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom)(1808–09: Finnish War.)(The British fleet attacked Copenhagen in 1801 (Battle of Copenhagen (1801)), which led to Denmark allying with the French).
Maybe Switzerland could have some units as well...
c) Duchy of Warsaw : after defeating the Austrian and Prussian, it should be nice that the duchy of Warsaw (Poland Core), would be reunited.
The duchy was heavily militarised, bordered as it was by Prussia, the Austrian Empire, and Russia, and it was to be a significant source for troops in various campaigns of Napoleon.
The standing army was of a considerable size when compared to the duchy's number of inhabitants. Initially consisting of 45,000 of regular soldiers (made up of both cavalry and infantry), its numbers were to rise to over 100,000 in 1810
An Infantry line unit should be available there as soon as Warsaw is free (at least one)!
d) Pirates !!!
Just a though... pirates could be present as well, attacking both sides ... (The US sent a fleet to fight the Barbary pirates 1800-15, its first overseas naval and marine war, which was successfully concluded when Capt S Decatur forced the bey of Algiers to cease the practice of holding US sailors hostage until tribute was paid.)

That's all Folks

Another point :
When repairing units, only the production and manpower cost appears. Even when it's a cavalry units. The horse cost is missing ...

ps: an answer would be much appreciated.

Thx

It is not because we do not post, we do not read. You are giving some great feedback and I`m sure Johan is looking at all the feedback coming in and he is working hard on a first patch.

Cheers,
