Incessant crashing

Post by SiegeRollout »

It's crashed 5x during the last battle. I'm trying to do a Save Game after every turn, but often times it says the Save is successful, but when I restart the game and go to load my last Save, it's not there or is 10 minutes of game play behind my Save point. I managed to reach the successful end of the battle, and when I watched the Summary video, it crashed and my Save files take me back to early stages of the game

Saw an Out of Memory Exception in output_log (attached), but this machine has 32GB of RAM and this was the only application running. Didnt even have a brower running at the time.

Cannot save games

I'm in the middle of a battle that keeps crashing. I try to save a game so I dont have to keep reverting back to last successful save point, and the dialogue box either says it successfully overwrote a prior saved game (but doesn't), or the entire game freezes up and never recovers (I left it for 30 minutes and never finished).

I tried via Windows Explorer to delete an older saved game, so the Saved game would appear as Empty. But even then similar behavior. I hit Save, select a slot, no errors are returned, but then if you hit Save the next turn the day-old save game from several missions ago still appears in that slot. Sometimes I hit Save and nothing happens at all. No crash/freeze, but also no sliding save bar to indicate it even tried. I tried applying the most recent patch to 1.0.4, didnt help/hurt.

I'm now completely stalled in the game because I cannot complete this mission without it crashing, and I cannot save it. I suspect even if I finish the battle successfully without it crashing, I wont be able to save it anyhow.

I'm not sure how to recover.

maybe better to load a report here as well, as per post

http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtop ... 14#p674514

for the developer to see and reply

OutOfMemoryException is the reported error in the logs, hoping a dxr report will shed more light tbh as vga driver is Intel

How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:

1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

once the report has been made, just attach it to your post with first adding the file to a zip, which is then permitted to attach to the forum

please give version type and version number, thanks

build 1.04 etc and steam / site version etc

Tried running it directly from the executable as Admin. This time it reported that it saved the game, and it even updated the saved game list to show the new timestamp/mission count. But if I exit the campaign and attempt to reload the saved game, it crashes the game a different way.

[HELP] Game Unplayable

Post by SiegeRollout »

Did uninstalling/re-installing help anything? I'm at the end of my rope here as well. I'm stuck and cannot move forward with basic functionality like completing a mission, saving a game, or loading a saved game.

I really want to play the game, and it's great when it's not crashing. But I'm on the verge of asking for a refund.

Card name: Intel(R) Iris(TM) Pro Graphics 580
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
Chip type: Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics Family

Dedicated Memory: 128 MB
Hybrid Graphics GPU: Integrated

9x APPCRASH imo are all memory related errors, which the developers will or can confirm

OutOfMemoryException in the log files is the clue, with the CPU being a Hybrid Graphics GPU so no card installed, so uses the CPU to be the GPU as well, without enough base memory installed, but users system ram to enhance, so work some don't, but this is for the developers to confirm fully i'm sorry to say, so will pass it along and see how they reply.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6770HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory: 32768MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 32658MB RAM (this is base system ram installed, 32gb) which is way more than enough, but having no GPU card installed means the O/S has shared 16gb of this for the Integrated GPU, but as it's shared memory, either it can't keep up or isn't working as designed as most VGA cards have quicker onboard fest ram installed right on the board, just for this purpose, which shared system memory isn't or wasn't ever meant or designed to do, with maybe DDR4 even used, most cards have DDR5

the GPU/CPU normally comes in laptops as a power saving device, giving extended battery life, but was never meant to be a pure gaming card, while some games will work with, others either won't or will struggle with it, this is my opinion and the developers may have some test results that say other wise, so please wait for a reply and answer from them also, i have been known to be wrong in the past, so it's just my limited view of the information given.
while this isn't to say the game won't work, as you show it does, but for long term use, it may either run of out memory or slow down to such a extent that makes gaming either unplayable or larger battles out of the question.

easy way imo is to free up as much power and resources as possible before you start the game, a clean profile will or could help with having as little running as possible on each load, make sure the laptop or desktop is on full power mode, eg not a power saving or low power settings, screen saver disabled, AV program in game mode or set to not scan etc when games on, eg add game to safe list.

Another screen shot of a different way the gameplay crashes when trying to save a game. Instead of the game outright crashing, or it saying it did save but doesnt actually, in this case it just gets stuck in "Saving Battle" forever until you kill the game with Task Manager.

have you tried a fresh new start? and not use the older save and see if you can get past it, just in case the save is corrupt or damaged in some way?

I've tried that a half dozen times. I go to the main War Room table where the "Proceed" button is the only option available. Most times I can restart the mission, but then it just crashes at some point in the game play. At least 2x I place my initial ship locations, hit Done, and it crashes before the initial jumps are completed.

It's an Intel NUC Skull Canyon. There is no game play slow down encountered, it simply crashes. I have my resources monitor turned on at the same time, and while a battle is running it's consuming less than 10% of available memory, and less than 50% of CPU. Most of the CPU cores are 99% idle. It doesnt appear this is a running out of resources issue, as I've successfully run far more intensive games without issue.

Even if the gameplay itself is having some kind of malloc issue, I am still not sure how that relates to inability to save/load a game successfully. I'd be OK with the occasional battle crash, as long as I could at least save/load a battle consistently.
