Yes you do, "Yes If LFDLM loses (or draws) and has to retreat to Oxford and fight another battle against YoungR will the campaign halt until the second battle is fought?" (see GDods post 20 July).

As for forces, if my maths are right, LFDM 1050pts v your 1250pts. No reinforcements for either side as ID is attacking D in 42 and B is pinned as is reforming. Striaght forward open battle as far I can see as both armies have moved (LFDM has stayed in 9 but only because B kicked his butt when he tried to attack him).
Righto, I'll set up a game against LFDM, PW = glory. Unfortunately, I'm away from the 2nd to 9th August.....

That sounds great. I'll review the rules again, and go through this thread in more detail today. Sir Will Heorwonthe has a fearsome ring to it. I like it, even if I can't pronounce it.

Sirs

A glorious victory for the Royalist cause near Oxford.

Losses:
0 = Royalist (youngr)
42 = Parliamentarian (LFDM)

The Parliamentarian force was caught unawares, being outnumbered and outmatched. They defended a central ridge with cavalry on their right wing, among fields, and a forward hill on their left defended by infantry. But to no avail. The Royalist force led by the Duke of Rutland attacked first the hill with pike then outshot the defenders on the ridge with many muskets. The cavalry was split on the 2 wings and did great damage to the Parliamentarian wings.

Duke of Rutland (Youngr)

Autumn rains in Northern Wales abated to allow troops to finally able to ford the flooded rivers. Duke of Ormonde wins a indecisive victory at New Ross before returning to Dublin. The Irish confederation signs a truce with the Royalists
James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose said to be causing trouble in the highlands some say he will declare for the King within a year. King Charles appointed William Laud as Archbishop of Canterbury. Laud is known to have Catholic leanings. The Earl of Stamford ejected from Devon and Cornwall ending the need for a local truce. Some say all of Devon and Cornwall will be Royalist very soon.

Meanwhile, The Sheriff of Nottingham seized the West Riding in the name of the King
BATTLE OF IKLEY COMMON as Snugglebunny of Hull, Lord Lieutenant of Hull and the East Riding (otherwise known as the Grand ole Duke of York) marched his 10000 men back to the NW Yorkshire border to unsuccessfully repel Kelen 'The Sheriff of Nottingham's further advance into Yorkshire. (strains of Ikley moor bah 'at... check the Traditional folk song!)
Lord Kingi ex-member of Parliament for Chichester, High Court of Justicee, standing member of the army committee, head of the committee for the advance of money, committee for plundered ministers, the committee for compounding has declared for the King (because he liked his name :) claiming all of Sussex in the Kings name.
Stunned by his neighbour's treachery Triarius, Lord Lieutenant of Dover Castle, member of Parliament for Tunbridge Wells (and former wobble) and recently returned ambassador to the Ottoman Empire has claimed the county of Kent in the name of Parliament, and has immediately put the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England under house arrest.

Turn 3 - Winter 1643
Winter 1643; Events affecting Turn 3 The Parliamentary party showed so united a front that even Pym's death, on 8 December 1643, hardly affected its resolution to continue the struggle. The troops from Ireland proved to be untrustworthy after all. Those serving on both sides were "mutinous and shrewdly infected with the rebellious humour of England". Similarly a small band of Londoners surprised and routed a Royalist detachment from Buckinghamshire at Alton on 13 December 1643, half the prisoners took the Covenant.

Winter Weather meant only Royalists could use flying columns
While parliamentarian armies bordering London County had only a chance of moving due to commanders attendance at Pym's funeral.
Meanwhile seasoned veterans contemplating the thought of having to engage the enemy within Ireland dreaded the thought of vast numbers of unreliable Irish conscripts.
BATTLE OF NASEBY Ironically, two years too early, the parliamentarians were beaten back from the counties around north of London in Hertfordshire, which saw a major engagement with Danny the former Duke of Warwick and current Protector and Lord Lieutenant of London (now known as Danny the DOUBLY Disgraced Protector and Lord Lieutenant of London) who was soundly repulsed by Lord Quiggly (with support from the Duke of Norfolk) despite support from the Eastern association forces under the Earl of Essex. Frozen by the winter chill and wet driving rain the outnumbered small parliamentarians force hid behind the hedges lamenting their wet powder while freshly arrived the flying column with well protected powder poured lead into their ranks.Too much for many of the new recruits filling the ranks from losses previously suffered they broke leaving only a few grizzled veterans to hold the field until overwhelmed. Indeed, a sad day for the republication cause.
Meanwhile the earl of Ayrshire continues to rally support in the belligerent counties of Ireland while Tairius the new commander of Dover castle continues to pursue the renegade and former High court justice Kingi through the southern counties. At the same time, Kelen, 'The Sheriff of Nottingham's forces mustered the horse to form a flying column to penetrate deeply into the northern counties and thereby reinforcing friendly advance of Lord Doley northwards. Too much for the aging former Bishop of Durham, and handing over the command for the forthcoming battle to the younger Lord Lieutenant of Dover castle each side to await the outcome.
BATTLE OF PRESTON The parliamentarians under Lord Tairius of Dover got their nose in front early on and took to the woods Lord Doyley blithely taking his time at toilet finally co-ordinated an attack and quality of his troops started to tell but the cost was high - Royalist foot ran out of steam and several broke but by then Royalist horse got in among the uncovered poor quality parliamentarian foot - now out of the woods just as night fell. Both suffering damnably from weather and shot retired the field to nearby towns. For outstanding service, the Committee of Both kingdoms awarded Lord Tairius, Lord High Protector of the Lancashire Hot-pot.
BATTLE OF STUDLEY GREEN In Cornwall, Andre Devereaux, Duke of Cornwall and Devon and Somerset continued his advance Eastwards only to be challenged and stopped near the border between Somerset and Wiltshire at an estate just outside of Trowbridge called Studley Green by the Earl of Southampton. For outstanding service, the Committee of Both kingdoms awarded the Earl of Southampton, Lord High Commissar of Parliamentary horse ('Stud')
Unfortunately, the Duke of Gloucester leaving scant garrison to secure his home county has had the support nullified by the devious plotting and presence of the Duke of Buckinghamshire and his men who has secured enough parliamentarian sympathies to hold the county for parliament.

Turn 4 - Spring 1644

The situation in spring
The original plan of the Parliamentary "Committee of Both Kingdoms", which directed the military and civil policy of the allies after the fashion of a modern cabinet, was to defend the Royalist advance on London. The Earl of Southampton's troops were to continue to drive back The Duke of Cornwall and to reconquer the west, the Earl of Ayreshire and the Scots, to advance and invest Lord Kelen's army.
In the Midlands, the District commander of Pembrokeshire and the Lincolnshire rebels could be counted upon to neutralise the one Earl of Ulster, and the others, the Duke of Rutland's Royalists. But the District Commander, once more deserted by his trained bands, was unable to profit by his victory of Monmouthshire, and retired to Gloustershire. Danny the Doubly Disgraced, too, was delayed because the Eastern Association was still suffering from the effects of the Duke of Norfolk's and Lord Quiggly's exploit in securing the Eastern Association counties. Anglia abandoned by the rebels not to be easily reoccupied. Moreover, the duke of Buckinghamshire and essex found themselves compelled to defend their conduct and motives to the "Committee of Both Kingdoms", and as usual, was straitened for men and money.

But though there were grave elements of weakness on the other side, the Royalists considered their own position to be hopeless. Lord Kelen was engaged in the fruitless siege of Durham. The North was again a centre of activity and counterbalanced the loss of the Eastern Association counties, and the situation in the north was practically desperate. Rupert himself came to Oxford on 25 April 1644 to urge that Sir Doley's army should be kept free to march to aid Durham. This was because Lord Kelen's army was now threatened, owing to the abandonment of the enemy's original plan and the return of the Earl of Ayreshire. Yet, there was further talk and hope of the concentric advance of three armies on London. The fiery Lord Quiggly and the methodical Duke of Norfolk (now honoured with Chequers Court) were at one, at least, in recommending that the London area, with its own garrison and a mobile forces under the District commander of Pembrokeshire, duke of Buckinghamshire, and Danny the Doubly Disgraced should be the prizes of their field armies' operations. The King, needing above all, adequate time for the stabilization of the northern offensive, was not in favour of abandoning any of the barriers to Essex's advance. The Duke of Gloucester, on the other hand, thought it advisable to contract the lines of defence, and Charles, as usual undecided, agreed to Lord Quiggly's scheme. Buckinghamshire, therefore, was defended early in March, and Oxford attacked shortly afterwards.
Yet a new thhreat loomed large in the summer to come. On 2 July 1644, despairing of the existing military system, Cromwell made to the "Committee of Both Kingdoms", the first suggestion of the New Model Army. "My lords," he wrote, "till you have an army merely your own, that you may command, it is . . . impossible to do anything of importance." The Royalist camp appeared about to collect themselves and redouble efforts and to take London with a feeling of urgency in the following summer campaign season!
Battles
BATTLE OF BUCKINGHAM HOUSE The Duke of Norfolk commanding the Royalists army in Buckinghamshire defeated the attacking rebel army of the Duke of Gloucester. They deployed in a defensive stance awaiting reinforcements, which turned the tide of battle in their favor. For outstanding service, King has awarded the Duke of Norfolk Chequers Court country house and allowed to quarter his coat of arms to include the chequer board of the Exchequer,
BATTLE OF CHILTERN HILLS The Grumpy Doge, Commander of the Trained Bands, member for Lewes led the defence of the county of Sussex against an invasion from the marauding Royalists under Gentleman pensioner Kingi the ex-member of Parliament for Chichester, High Court of Justice, standing member of the army committee, head of the committee for the advance of money, committee for plundered ministers and the committee for compounding. After and initial exchange of handkerchiefs and a lot of prancing around both sides lined up with the royalists having the upper hand in the enclosed fields. Luckily the parliamentarian cavalry finally moved into position and the foot slogged into charge range turning a dire situation into a republican victory when flanks hit and cohesion dropped across the line, breaking the Royalist's resolve. For outstanding service, the Committee of Both kingdoms awarded the Grumpy Doge the Chairman of the courts of quarter sessions.
BATTLE OF FRAGGED-BY-RAW NEAR KIRBY HILL Sir Snugglebunnies, The Lord Lieutenant of Hull and the East Riding hastily assembled raw northern sympathizers into Pike and Shot units and with his experienced artillery, commanded shot and dragoons held the flanks, slowing down the great mass of Cavaliers. In the center, Parliament's superior foot, supported by small parties of cavalry, broke through to victory, as the battle continued to swirl on the flanks.Lord Kelen in a fit of rage leading the lifeguard cavaliers whipped up his men only to fall foul of the tenacious determination of the Lord Lieutenant's raw recruits. For outstanding service, the Committee of Both kingdoms awarded the Sir Snugglebunnies under the Ship Money Act 1640 the right to levy the sheriffs and justices of inland as well as of maritime counties and towns the sum of £207,000 and the title of Admiral of the King's Southern, Northern and Western Fleets
BATTLE OF WHITE HORSE HILL Duke of Rutland led his Royalists to a victory against the Duke of Buckinghamshire's forces near Oxford. The Parliamentarian force was caught unawares, being outnumbered and outmatched while the Cavaliers did great damage to the Parliamentarian wings. The King awarded the Duke Rutland the title of Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire & residence in perpetuity of Mapledurham House.
i]BATTLE OF Llanthony PRIORY [/i] Forces under the Earl of Ulster, Protector, Lord Lieutenant and Chief Secretary of Ireland easily repulsed a foray into Monmouthshire by a force under the command of with minmal losses. The King saw fit to award the Earl of Ulster an additional peerage; 1st Earl of Cardigan and keeper of the Royal Kennels

THE DEFINITIVE SET OF CAMPAIGN RULES :D as at 4/08/17.
While I continue to welcome any conflicts or omissions [as these guidelines are constantly developing and they belong to us all] I think we now have a definitive set of workable campaign rules that cover most, if not all eventualities. I'd like to thank those of you who participated in their development, in particular Kelen and Awsum, for their unceasing patience, observations and contributions. I claim no copyright for reproduction and hope that other Wargamers can take our work and create a workable on-line multi-player campaign system for all of us to enjoy. Let my meager efforts to mediate the campaign continue!
And to think someone needs to organise this stuff.jpg

OBJECTIVE
1) Gather as many titles as possible
2) ensure your faction controls 33 or more counties

THE MAP
Each District and county has a number and description.
Each district has a number of counties.
Each District is worth 100 additional army points
Each within county is worth 50 points except your designated home county
The player who claims the most counties in a district receives the benefit.
A Faction owning an entire District can nominate a player to receive the additional District points
London does not have a number it is just London and as a district entitles the occupier to an extra 50 pts (plus district bonus of 100 points)
Parliament's capital is London, Royalists is now Oxford. Both are defended by a 1,000 point garrison. Lose your capital and you cannot rebuild disbanded armies until you recapture it. Garrisons cannot attack or reinforce bordering counties. They are strictly to defend only.
A player cannot cede a county to another unless splitting of a county for eliminated player.

CURRENT PLAYERS

FORCES
Your force may from any of these lists and can change between your side's lists throughout the campaign unless there is a restriction.

Royalist 1643-44
Royalist Raiders 1643 - 45...........Can be used either as a field army or as a flying column force
Royalist Cornish 1643................Only if you own a county in Cornwall
Scots Royalists 1644-45..............Only if you own a County in Ireland, Scotland or Northern Counties)

Parliament 1643-45
Scots Covenant. 1642-47 ..........Only if you own a County in Northern Counties, Ireland or Scotland
Parliament + Scots 1644-46.........Only if you own a County in Northern Counties, Ireland or Scotland

You may decide the type of force you field but must consider the restrictions including the use of flying columns. Later lists will come into play as the campaign progresses. eg: From Summer 1644 New Model Army becomes available
Only Royalists can use a flying column which uses the Royalist Raiders army list.
A player must advise the campaign manager what army is declared when they lodge their move in the campaign. If the player fails to advise the campaign manager of the list when he moves, the choice will be at the Campaign managers discretion

1 CYCLE
The campaign starts as Summer 1643.
Each Cycle is a Season.
Sequence
Players..............Orders................................................................... Week 1
Me...................Unopposed moves and Upcoming Battles advised by............... Last day of Week 1
Players..............Battles completed by...................................................Week 2-4
Me...................New Map Posted.........................................................Last day Week 4

While it's intended to complete a cycle over 4 weeks we may have to revisit the timeline to ensure everyone is under no pressure to complete and report.

GENERAL RULES
Each player starts with 1000 points
Additional points are generated for armies based on ownership of counties and districts
You may only have one force in play unless points exceed 2000 points
If points exceed 2000 points armies may be split into two separate forces under command of a single player.
You may play as an independent (by declaring yourself king or protector) or form alliances but only with your own side.
Players can join at any time when their are unclaimed counties
Players can opt out at any time and their provinces become “neutral” (ie: unclaimed)
If a player no longer owns any county they are eliminated from the game, unless another player in their faction cedes a county to give him a recruiting base. This is the only time a county can be ceded to another player.
From time to time random events may occur based on a historical random events generator.

CAMPAIGN MOVEMENT
General
Intended moves posted in royalist or parliamentarian thread by end of week 1 of each month
Moves limited to 1 per cycle (season)
Same faction movement does not change county title
A force is a flying column for the entire move and must fight as one if contact is encountered in either county it is moving into. The force can move as a normal force during the next cycle
Movement is resolved simultaneously by each stage of a multiple county move [and resultant battle] is resolved in a sequential order
Movement ceases on first contact. Please note this may still result in additional moves due to retreating into a friendly county as a result of battle.
If two friendly armies move into the same province the force with the most points moves and the forces with least points remain stationary.
Movement ceases on contact with an enemy force. Contact is determined at the end of each stage of a multiple county move.
A force other than a flying column can move two counties in a cycle if the first is through a friendly county, or one county at a time
A force designated as a flying column Royalist raiders can move three counties in one move.
If a battle has to go on beyond the end of the cycle then both forces can't move the next month (and may possibly be subject to another players attack in the new month as a result of other players monthly move.
Campaign manager will determine the results of those moves and may need to post new map interim that includes unopposed moves and upcoming clashes in the common thread by end of week 1
Campaign Manager will post the final map by end of week 4

Claiming counties
Players occupy a county by moving into an unclaimed or enemy unoccupied county or claim it by winning a battle.Possession [and it's benefit] commences at the end of the turn after battles are resolved.
A flying column may only claim the last county of it's move.
Once a faction have claimed an entire division of counties the player receive an additional 100 points. If one faction owns all counties, the player that owns the most counties in a district receives the benefit. If a district has an equal number of counties owned by two in a faction they can decide who benefits.
If more than one force from the same faction is fighting for a province the lowest causalities wins the county.
Same faction movement does not affect title to the county
Map and marked army position will be updated at the end of each month showing the counties in your chosen colour and the forthcoming battles for the month

BATTLES

General
The relative points of attacker and defender will be obvious from this map and reference to rules
Armies that are only 50 apart in strength are equal and fight at the size of the smaller army.
Players negotiate details of conflict in the common thread and complete battles by the end of the month.
Please note: If a challenge goes unanswered by the end of the month the county is automatically taken by the attacker issuing the challenge.
If a battle has to go on beyond the end of the cycle then both forces can't move the next month (and may possibly be subject to another players attack in the new month as a result of other players monthly move.

Types of Battles, Points and Terrain
Player's decide points for battles by adding up the points from their claimed provinces and referring to the following table.
MOVEMENT.........................................................................................TYPE OF BATTLE...............................TERRAIN
a. Two forces moving into a county, or move into each others occupied county..............Always open battle............................Always Pot luck

b. If one force is already occupying a county.....................................................Defender decides..............................Defender choice unless one general occupies twice or more provinces = their choice

c. If (b) applies & a defender friendly force is adjacent to the county being attacked......Reinforced battle for the defender......... Defender choice
[army pts total + extra 180pts reinforcements rounded up in favour of defender]

d. If (b) applies & an attacker friendly force is adjacent to the county being attacked.....Reinforced battle for the attacker...........Attacker choice
[army pts total + extra 180pts reinforcements rounded up in favour of attacker]

e. If (b) applies & equal attacker & defender friendly forces adjacent to the county being attacked....Open battle.......................Pot luck

f. If (b) applies & more attacker or defender friendly forces adjacent to the county being attacked....Send flank force..................Pot luck
[army pts total + extra 200pts reinforcements rounded down to nearest 100 pts]

Terrain Exceptions
All counties including Ireland (Down and Antrim) should restrict the terrain to Agricultural except...[/size]
Staffordshire (25),Derbyshire (32), Cheshire (33), Lancashire (34), Yorkshire (35-37) , Cumberland (40), Westmoreland (41), Northern Counties (38-41),Monmouthshire and Wales (42-44), and Scotland (45-47) can be Pot luck due to either heavily forested or mountains present.
I'm going to assume the Cotswolds, the Chilterns, and the North and South Down are rolling hills that have no end more than the mountainous slopes of Wales.
Therefore, when a player has a choice, it only applies to these 'pot luck' districts.

Results of Battles
Winner needs to post who has won in the common thread as soon as possible.
Battle results will be posted by the end of week 4 (sometimes maybe earlier if battles are conducted in a timely fashion)
When there is more than one battle, the battles as are resolved in sequential order
By winning a battle the county changes ownership
When a player loses a battle they must retreat. They cannot retreat into any enemy territory. They can only retreat into adjacent friendly territory. If they cannot retreat the the army is disbanded.
movement options for armies after a battle are:-
1) A loss; the army must remain stationary and unable to support the following turn
2) A win or draw; 25% or under losses no penalty, 26% - 49% can only move 1 county, 50% and over must remain stationary.
3) Any reduction in movement means no reinforcement

Ah, I took it as 2 seperate criteria;

- a loss of 25% or more (of your forces), or,
- conceding a battle (i.e. losing)

I'm fine with the losing army having to spend a turn re-organising and recruiting, but in order to lose a battle you have to have lost at least 40% of your forces, so I don't see what the 25% has to do with this?

I took this to mean that even if you won your battle, if you lost 25% of your forces you would also have to spend a turn re-organising. In Doley v Triarius' battle I get it that that there was no actual victor and as they both suffered 25% casaulties they were both fixed for a turn, but in those hard fought battles where it's the first one to 60% casaulties, often it is a Phyrric victory as the winner has lost over 50% of their forces as well.

Otheriwse to me it doesn't seem logicial that if you drew but took 25% loses you're stuck for a turn, but if you won and took 36% losses (the minimum losses that could be incurred if the 'loser' hit 60%, but could be as high as 59%!) then you're fine. You did seem to support this interpretation in your reply on the 19th regarding LFDM potentially losing both his battles this turn but pinning both Brent (now W) and Youngr due to causing them 25%. I would have thought that 'any' army that loses 25% or more during a battle would be fixed due to the need to re-organise and recruit, but that may just be me.

I appreciate my intention was not clearly articulated and was poorly worded... my intention was that if you lost and the difference was 25% or more then the army should be stationary but somehow the change was first worded as "more than 25% meaning 26% or more" then corrected to "25% or more". As it stands, you are quite correct...all losses mean you are stationary next turn, which makes the % redundant. I think it may be too hard on the winner to penalize them by being unable to move next turn because realistically most battles incur over 25% losses, and other solutions become complicated. What do everybody think?

Should it be
a) if you lost and the difference was 25% or more then the army should be stationary
b) if you lost and the losses were 25% or more then the army should be stationary
c) if you lost or won and the losses were 25% or more then the army should be stationary
d) some other determinant including higher %'s

Clearly, I don't want to slow the game for people so everyone is sitting doing nothing for a whole season...remember a move is a whole season, so realistically even significant losses can be made up in 3 months. It's more a case of a methodology to disadvantage a force who suffers horrendous loss.

There has to be some penalty other than a retreat for losing a battle because losses are automatically replaced between turns. Otherwise battles will just become a pushing match, back and forth, and the game may degenerate into a stalemate. If the retreating army was the attacker in the battle then they don't lose any territory when they retreat back to the county from which they came, so nothing is risked in that situation unless there is a further penalty. I suggest a variation on (a): If the difference between the loser's loss percentage and the winner's loss percentage is under 25% then the loser's maximum move may only be one country (i.e. an adjacent one) on the following turn, otherwise the loser forfeits all movement on the following turn.

Now, what about winning armies that took high casualties? Certainly they would have their options to exploit the victory reduced, so I would implement a similar restriction: If the winner's loss percentage is under 25% then the winner's move is unrestricted on the following turn, otherwise the winner's maximum move may only be one country (i.e. an adjacent one) on the following turn.

In other words, the loser of a battle will always have movement restrictions imposed on the following turn, and the winner may also have movement restrictions on the following turn if their casualties were high.

Greetings, I'm writing this on my phone in northern Thailand, so can't put things into paragraphs. Losing a battle meant you lost your artillery and baggage and your wounded and prisoners and had lots of deserters. Winning gave you the enemy artillery and baggage and prisoners who changed to your side. So I think a winning army should always be able to move, a losing army must remain stationary for one season. In a draw any army losing over 25% also cannot move. Andre
