Welcome to a great gaming experience.
Most players in the 'leagues' or 'tournaments' have considerable gaming experience.
Here are my suggestions:
Got o the game's multiplayer screen and place several challenges. or take up challenges that are already there (they tend to fill-up fast, so your best option might be to place your own challenges).
Also, go to each of the tournaments and leagues and volunteer to fill-in for another player if they go on vacation, or to be a replacement.

Good advice. You missed out on the last tournament but you can join the ECW campaign if you'd like to... Brent's army (you'll see a star with B in the middle) is available for the Royalists have a look at the ECW Campaign 2017 common thread to see the action so far ... it;'s already spring 1644, leave a comment there if you're interested, the faction leaders are very helpful and we'll help you with the game play... average time to dedicate to it is up to you but generally a move and resultant battles last on average a month...so no big time investment
