Afrikakorps Mareth Line

Post by Andy2012 »

Won AK on Fieldmarshal already twice, loved it. Best DLC for Panzercorps so far.
This time, I tried the campaign trailing the historically correct loss version. (Cheated to lose Alam Halfa)
El Alamein and Kasserine Pass were both rather easy DV.
But I just cant hack the Mareth Line.
I mean, the Allies outnumber me in the air 6:1 easily. Even with my 4 elite FW190s, I barely make a dent.
Overstrength P40s, elite Spitfires. British tanks overstrength 13, 3 stars? I upgraded everything to Tigers (four total), but
this is just impossible.
What is that recovery workshop for, anyway? Never gets explained.

My question: Is there any way to win this with a DV? Any unit composition possible? Even with obsessive saving and reloading,
this seems barely possible. Also, a fighting retreat to wittle them down is not feasible with that kind of numerical superiority.
I kind of get that this is supposed to be difficult and should reflect Rommels inferior numbers. But even with my expert handling
of my core force, this is not possible. Italian Aux is useless as always.

I find the best defence against overwhelming airpower is good AA. Specifically, 88mm guns. I'd recommend two in your core, and station stuff around them so that it is protected (For bonus points they are also absolutely disgusting against enemy armour, especially if it suppressed.)

Ideally sucker enemy aircraft into its guns by placing a temping looking target within enemy LoS, while the guns are obfuscated by the fog of war. Keep your fighters back and out of line of sight until you can whittle down some of their initial strength. Soften them up with guns.

I also quite like using some of my tactical bombers as me110 'reserve fighters' for finishing off very low strength enemy fighter units.

Don't forget 'assist' bonuses. If you intend to attack a unit with multiple units, move them all into place first, so that they receive the bonus for others being there, rather than moving them and attacking one at a time.

Hi Psyx, thanks, appreciate it.
But I am already pretty good at Panzercorps (have finished AK twice already on Fieldmarshal, also all the other DLCs). I know the game rules and all the nasty tricks. But this mission is something else, so the standard strategies dont work here.
Anybody else? This is really absurdly difficult.
