Problem loading/saving games, v1.30/Win10

Post by Kamerer »

I recently purchased Soviet Corps (installed) and U.S. Corps (not installed yet). Windows.

a) I noticed after installing Soviet Corps, it was not appearing in the Slitherine directory but in it's own new one. Also the PC icon and link I had were now broken. If I go to the Slitherine directory and try to launch PC, it's broken. I can launch it from Soviet Corps (or Allied Corps icon).

b) Loading was very slow. I upgraded to Windows 10, and it was so slow I thought the game was broken. I later realized it was taking about 1:30 minutes to find each saved game, or to find a location for a new save (very inconvenient).

c) I added the 1.30 patch hoping that would change, but no solution.

d) The game crashes if I toggle between windows (using tab key).

There were no indications of trouble when downloading or installing.

Hmm,

I do have 64-bit Windows. I had no problems before installing Soviet Corps.

I could do that, but it would take most of a day to uninstall and re-install everything. (!!!)

Is that seriously the only way?

Could I just remove Soviet Corps, and return it and U.S. Corps, and go back to having my other games working without investing a lot of hours into this patch?

Or can you explain how to re-install everything from one download in a reasonable time (I have all expansions)? I did not know the new games were not compatible with Windows 64-bit before I purchased them; I saw no warning about that.

You seem to have a corrupt installation, so a clean reinstallation of the game (with the right Installing sequence), logically should be your next step (in my opinion).

I'm afraid not.

You can always redeem Steam keys, and install the game via Steam.

So un-install Soviet Corps and re-install it? Skip the registry mod? You are saying the installation of Soviet Corps is likely corrupted, or it's not going to work on a 64-bit machine anyway? (I could not reconcile the logic)

I do not wish to use Steam as it's more cumbersome and intrusive; I regret downloading things that way in the past.

I believe I have it working, though with all my other games lost.
I installed the patch for 64-bit registries. Then I just re-installed Soviet Corps from my previous download. I played a while and
a) The issue of first taking a long time to find saved games remains, but:
b) after that, it is stable and that does not re-appear.
c) none of the expansions are accessible.

I really think it is necessary to tell people up front there is a patch necessary for 64-bit machines since there is a known issue. It would have saved a lot of time - especially since it's a known issue, not one-off.

Is there a way to "unlock" old games or is it necessary to tediously re-install each one?

That wasn't patch for 64 bit Windows versions. That was a Windows registry cleaner for Windows 64 bit versions. It wipes all the information in the Windows registry regarding Panzer Corps installation.
It's to be used when you want to do a clean reinstallation of the game.

No, I'm afraid not, there isn't other way to install the other expansions, unless you have bought Panzer Corps Gold.

OK, so I have tediously reloaded all games in order, and also updated to 1.30 and US Corps which was purchased but not installed yet. Everything works w/o the excessive crashing as before (still crashes periodically - did not happen before purchasing Soviet Corps and installing), BUT: it takes 1 to 2 minutes to find saved games or to find a the directory to save games when you want. That is really a breaker in gameplay. Is this common or...?

This is running in a very fresh, clean Win 10 install that is up to date, on an otherwise reliable Lenovo laptop.

Probably it's related with folder permissions or maybe with the interference)conflict of a 3rd party program (like anti-virus).
That's a system issue not a game issue, and the installation of Soviet Corps is innocuous on that regard.
I've been providing support for Panzer Corps since it was released and I don't recall seeing this reported with this game.

Rename the folder "Panzer Corps" in the Windows documents folder (...\Documents\My Games) as "_Panzer Corps".
Then open the game installation folder. Locate and select a file named "autorun.exe".
Press the right mouse button and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator.
Click on Apply and Ok.
Run the game, and check if the issue persists.

Hi,

Getting back to trying to solve this problem now after a while!

I checked for the file you mentioned but the game did not save it that way when I installed it (re-installed it per your instructions).

I don't find a /windows/documents/Panzer Corps folder. I do find this:

This PC/Documents/My Games/Panzer Corps

there are also directories for all the expansions/editions/etc. I have (e.g., Allied Corps, etc)

In it there are sub folders labeled Log, Replay, Save, and Save Corps

There is no autorun.exe, only two files, LAUNCHER and LAUNCHER2

There is also a directory /Program Files (x86)/Slitherine/Panzer Corps

This has an autorun.exe but when I click it, it is not the launcher I get when I click the desktop icon. this launches a Pc Gold launcher box (I think). The one on my desktop always opens saying "Soviet Corps."

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
When you install the game it will create two different folders: The game save file folder and the game installation folder.
The saved files are stored in the Windows documents folder (...\Documents\My Games\Panzer Corps\save).
The game installation folder is by default at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Slitherine\Panzer Corps".

So what I've asked you to do is firstly rename the folder "Panzer Corps" in the Windows documents folder (...\Documents\My Games) as "_Panzer Corps".
Then open the game installation folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Slitherine\Panzer Corps"), find and select a file named "autorun.exe".
Press the right mouse button and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Tick the option Run this program as an administrator.
Click on Apply and Ok. Run that autorun.exe and forget the Soviet Corps one in your desktop.

Hi,

Thanks. I did that. I created a desk top icon and now it launches a "gold" launcher box. BUT

1) I tried moving my old saved games from the _Panzer Corps to the new folder, but the problem persists. Any way to access them w/o problem?

2) Before playing through SC and USC, I was up to Eben Emael in a new trip through the GC. I moved my saved corps folder over to the new folder and started a "new game" with that saved corps and it seems to work OK so far.

I'm afraid not. They might be corrupted.
What happens when you try to load them in the game? The game crashes, freezes?
Did you had any mod installed when you've saved them?
