What period will the lists go up to

Post by Fenton »

Hi all

Just joined and am interested in the Italian wars and some of the later periods just after the War of the Roses

Just wondering what sort of timeline FOG will cover?

Cheers

FoG goes up to 1500 AD and the lists are designed accordingly.

I am sure FoG would also be useable for the early Italian wars, but to do the Renaissance period justice we will need to produce a period-specific set of rules in due course.

Thanks for that, I want to do Early Feudal Stephen and Maltilda Wars anyway, so no real problem anyway

Some friends and I have been desperately wanting to play the Thirty Years War, but have never been able to find an acceptable set of rules for this period. Being very impressed with FoG, it would be spectacular if someday a modification/supplement was produced that covered TYW (and ECW and Eastern Renaissance too, I guess).

FOG Renaissance

Post by GuyFawcett »

Hi

I would be really interested in playtesting a FOG version for the ECW. I've bought FOG and read through the rules and really like the system (first playtest set for the 29-Feb) and felt that there wouldn't too much to change for it to work into the Pike and Shot era.

So if your really considering another version I would sure like to help.

Good to know. When we get around to doing the period no doubt it will have a section on the board and those who want to volunteer to help beta test can remind us of their interest.

My interest is in early italian wars, I have french/swiss Spanish italian/landsknecht armies. As well as ottoman turk from the same timeframe.

Will any of the army llists cover early italian wars, landsknechts, etc?

Well the French, Italian and other lists in Storm of Arrows go up to 1500AD so do cover the start of the wars - but the majority of the wars are after 1500.

Greetings

I actually spent a bit of time at lunchtime thinking about doing Fornovo with FoG using French Ordonnance and Italian Condotta.

I plan to take my Italian Wars Imperial army and wedge it into the post 1470 German list. The landsknechte will serve as the pike. Arquebusier as handgunners. Close enough.

Will the "Storm of Arrows" supplement include the Holy Roman Empire or Italian Wars armies?

Storm of Arrows does include the HRE, French and Italian armies up to 1500AD so just covers the start of the Italian Wars - but only the initial bit.

I am happy to see that I am not alone in waiting impatiently for a Renaissance (XVI°-XVII°C) rules.

nikgaukroger - Thanks for the rapid reply and the information, I'll definately see about getting my hands on the "Storm of Arrows" book. I would have liked to have seen the rules cover the Italian Wars in general, but; I'll play with what is available. It's to bad they didn't stretch it at least to cover Pavia 1525.

nicofig - I'm definately in your camp when it comes to Late Renaissance gaming, unfortunately; I live on the other side of the world from you.

To be honest they'd probably handle Pavis OK - you may need to think about whether some MF firearms were needed, possibly with a 4 MU range by then for fire arms as well.

That was basically what I was thinking. Just increase the range to 4MU and you can use the Armies that go up to 1500 with no problem. That was the first thing I looked at to see what the army compostion was. The French Ordance should work just fine, Superior Knights and Swiss Pike, plus lots of crappy French pikes and crossbows. The Late German includes Landsknecht and all the other troops you need for Maximillians forces. Plus all the Italian armies. The only force you dont have are the Spanish, but with just a little research you could come up with those.

Greetings

I agree that it shouldn't be too hard. However I think you might have to modify mobility of artillery especially to take into account the flanking manoeuvre at Ravenna.

I'm very interested in the early Italian Wars - up to the Battle of Pavia - and would very much like to see a variant of FoG to cover that period.

Hi,

I was very pleased to read Mr Bodley-Scott's reply, saying that Renaissance rules would come "in due course"

As someone heavily involved in The Assault Group (http://www.theassaultgroup.com), i would be very interested to get involved in these new rules.
If there is any way in which we at TAG can get involve with the beta-version mentioned above, we would be very keen to help.

In the mean time, i'll continue to buy FoG army books, i am looking forward the Eternal Empire book immensely. 8)

Cheers pete

Here is another Italian wars buff with an army of around 200 Landsknechts awaiting proper activation.

Regarding the rules I think that FOG works quite well up to 1529, though the arquebus and handguns were (as others have already noted) a bit more effective then their earlier equivalents - at the same time their effect on morale lessened due to their increased frequency. I plan to use the points and rules for crossbows for any handguns post 1500.
