Trigger Guidance - Randomizing Initial Deployment & Other

Post by wbp3517 »

I'm attempting my first foray into designing a custom scenario. Focus is 82nd Airborne on D-Day (Mission Boston). Good map (I believe), gotten hang of Primary & Secondary objective build and completion status, and playing with different ways to manage drop zones / supply, etc.

A few things I've been unable to accomplish (and not sure are currently feasible) that I'd appreciate any guidance on are:

1) Randomized Defender (AI) Placement: I've searched the forum extensively and played with event / triggers to try and randomize placement of defending (German) forces at the beginning of the scenario but cannot get it to work. If anyone can post a guide on how to achieve randomized initial spawn / deployment I would appreciate it. (even for single unit) (Potentially used for anti-air placement)

2) Randomized Human Controlled Unit Initial Spawn: Assuming no way to randomize initial spawn for Human units (spawned paratroopers in transport). I currently have defined spawn points with fuel = 1 or 0 to restrict "drop" locations near defined drop zones (DZ "T", DZ "O" or DZ "N" as it were)

3) Automatic Unit Strengthening: Is there an Event / Trigger scenario that will incrementally increase unit strength (simulating unit gathering over time to be used for airborne troops)? (I don't believe so)

I'm fairly certain #1 is feasible. Not certain regarding #2 or #3.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Best way to learn is to check on the work of others. I think the Manila mission of the Jap campaign has already some random placements. Other original scenarios most likely got some random stuff too, but I can’t name them now. No idea if some human player randomization is also in some of the campaign missions. I guess it’s all done by check trigger state condition and random trigger effect on scenario start.
Copy these original scenarios from the installation folder to the user folder to take a look at them in the editor.

Set Unit Status only increases whatever units to a set strength value. Something like a heal-effect doesn’t seem to exist.
I would simply change income (RPs) as long as drop zones are owned by the player. If you don’t want the player to buy further units then remove the command points after deployments by adding negative command points or simply let the player start with given units without command points. New unit reinforcements should be triggered on specific turns. That’s how I would do it at least.

I've set up triggers to randomly spawn two separate coastal guns at start of a Narvik scenario I'm working on.
The effect is that either one of the coastal guns may spawn or not.
Note that the trigger may enable a folder that is disabled.
It even worked the first time I tried it :D

Thanks for the feedback.

I ended up modeling from the Marines 6-USMC-TARAWA-MAKIN scenario which has a number of random placements for deployed AI units.

I've only had a chance to play with it briefly but ended up changing mine from attempted random spawn to random redeployment to different hex for already placed unit. I think mine was failing because I had the 'Active at Start' checked for all my triggers (was getting all units to spawn 100% of time). Regardless think I've got enough direction now to continue to play with it.

Still not sure what the Amount number for a Random Trigger defines. I'm guessing if I have 4 linked triggers and an Amount = 2 then 2 of the 4 triggers will activate based on their definitions. . . . will experiment.

Will try and post images later for anyone else that is struggling with similar issue (or maybe I'm just dense).

Thanks again.

Sorry for the delay posting screen captures. . .

Re-Deployment Test Triggers working -

A) Define default location on map (unit deployed at start)

B) Will re-deploy to 1 of 3 referenced locations (1 default and 2 "re-deployed' hex locations)
