Hello hugh2711,
I landed with my strongest tank unit (overstrength 12) followed by armored artillery (Stug). Then came strong infantry. I used the battleships to supress the enemy first before attacking them. Space is important and can only be gained by forcing the British to retreats. I thought that Pioneers would be the best to defeat these forts but anti tank (especially the 88er) make much more damage to the forts. I had several surrenders due to missing space and lost around 4 to 5 units until London was captured. After that the rest is not difficult. It is absolut mandatory to keep the British battleships away from the invasion area!

Die Ostfront 43

April 43 (round 45): With a large number of infantry and strong tank troops the Red Army tries to break through to Leningrad. But the Wehrmacht has experienced Grenadier and strong Panzer IVG divisions in the area. After defeating the Russian attack the Wehrmacht will counter attack and try to break through quickly to the area north of the Volga River. In parallel the Finnish troops move to Archangelsk.

The main battle in the east is raging around Kursk. The Red army was able to capture Kursk and is trying to break the German defense line south of the city with massive tank forces supported by artillery (Stalin Orgeln) and bombers. It is necessary for the Wehrmacht to move more Panzer IIIM divisions from the Moscow area down to Kursk.

June 43 (round 50): East of Leningrad the attack of the Red Army was stopped and now the Wehrmacht strikes back with many divisions to reach the city of Vologda north of the Volga River (yellow). In the Moscow area the front line is still unchanged. The Russians bring division after division to the battle and the Wehrmacht can’t make a single step further to the east. Hopefully after capturing Vologda the Wehrmacht can get back the initiative in the battle of Moscow.

Near Kursk the battle is reaching its climax as the Russians have brought an enormous number of artillery (yellow) to the front even increasing the pressure on the German defenders by neutralizing the German artillery. The OKW has reacted by replacing the infantry in the defense line with tank and anti tank divisions plus tank reserves in the back of the front to replace exhausted divisions. But also these armored divisions take high damage in the Russian drum fire and the repair is expensive. It is important to secure the Iraqi oil fields for the Reich.

How to manage a defensive wall of steel without permanent losses? The high number of Russian artillery and strong tank forces will lead permanently to automatic retreats on German side. Thus it is very important to keep room behind the troops (especially the tanks) to avoid surrenders. If a unit is strongly damaged it has to be moved back and to be replaced by a fresh unit (that could even be an infantry division; often an infantry can survive an attack of a Red Army tank unit if it has a save place for retreat where it can’t be attacked further). Far away from enemy units the damaged unit can be repaired to full strength next round and go back to battle in the following round. Of course this strategy needs reserves behind the front line. Big trouble begins if these reserves are gone and it is not possible anymore to move a unit back for repair. Surrenders can’t be avoided in all situations especially if the Russians have a lot of artillery and tactical bombers that strike first. But it is often possible to “sacrifice” not so important units (like infantry or Axis tanks and Axis anti tank).

November 43 (round 60, picture was made with fog of war off): In the north the city of Vologda will be attacked soon. After that the German troops will turn south to reach the Volga River. In the Moscow area the Germans have still to defend against endless fierce Russian attacks. The Finnish have reached Archangelsk with infantry and artillery.

At Kursk the Russian offensive has lost its power (picture made with fog of war off). In the south the Wehrmacht has gained room again to move to Rostov. But of course the main target Stalingrad is still far away. In the center it is necessary to attack in the direction of Voronezh to reach the Don River again. But now with begin of winter 43/44 it is clear that the Red Army will again set up a number of strong divisions in the winter offensive. So crossing the Don in 44 is expected to be hard work. Several strong fighter squads Fw 190 A-5 from England together with three Würzburg Radars are on the way to Russia and will enforce the German Luftwaffe when snow fall stops. But the urgently needed victorious Panzer and Stug divisions from England will need at least until summer 44 to reach the Ostfront in serious numbers to give the German attack a punch in the southern front line. It is mandatory to reach the Volga River until end of 44 to cross the frozen river before spring 45. Else the Volga will be a serious obstacle to reach all victory cities in time.

Global 43
The year 1943 has seen two glorious victories for the Axis. England was captured and the American Torch invasion of Tunisia was stopped. As a consequence operation Overlord will not happen in 1944 and also the Mediterranean theater will stay in German hands. In Iraq next duty will be to defeat the British armies. After that Egypt can be attacked from two sides. There are really good chances to defeat the British Empire before round 99. More and more the focus is moving east where the Wehrmacht is trying to reach the Volga River to defeat the Russian Bear. But in the Moscow area there is no further approach to the east for the Axis and especially in the southern frontline the Axis troops are still far away from their final targets.

The year 1944

England 44
February 44 (round 65): So what to do? That was the question end of 1943. The British submarine (yellow) is still blocking the port of Plymouth. To loose not even more time the first divisions were embarked at the port of Liverpool (green). But first all British radars and forts in the western part of England were destroyed. They have a large spotting range and could activate British battleships in the north (red) to move south and attack the German transports. To free the port of Plymouth the last German destroyer fleet is trying to sneak away (blue) the British submarines.

April 44 (round 70): The German destroyers were nearly defeated but they were able to pull the British submarines to the Atlantic. Thus embarking the German Panzer troops from Plymouth was started. Only some few divisions stay in England to fight partisans.

Africa 44
July 44 (round 75): The Afrika Korps quickly moved back to Tobruk via road and ship transport. Rommel’s Panthers arrived first at the western part of the defense ring. In the meantime the Italian ships had already suppressed the entrenched British infantry and the German Panthers easily broke the defense ring and destroyed the protecting artillery. Tobruk will fall in a few rounds. Far in the west an Italian motorized army is moving on the road to Casablanca to capture all cities in North Africa.
july44_africa.jpg
july44_africa.jpg (238.38 KiB) Viewed 6025 times
December 44 (round 86): The Afrika Korps prepares to attack the strong British defense line west of Alexandria. There are 13 rounds remaining to break through, capture Alexandria and move to Cairo. The Italians will gather all remaining battleships at Alexandria to weaken the strong British defenders together with Axis bomber fleets. In the west the Italian motorized army has reached Agadir ending all fights in this area.

Middle East 44

April 44 (round 70): The Panthers crushing in the open flank of the British armies and supported by the Axis bombers annihilate the British armored forces west of Bagdad. Basra is captured and the two Iraqi oilfields are finally saved for the Axis.
april44_mideast.jpg
april44_mideast.jpg (172.21 KiB) Viewed 6025 times
December 44 (round 86): After destroying all British forces in Iraq the Wehrmacht started to recapture Palestine. In the last 13 rounds the goal is to capture southern Palestine, cross the Suez channel and capture Cairo (red). In parallel the Afrika Korps is attacking from the west. The British have lost all initiative and only try to defend their positions as long as possible.

Die Ostfront 44
April 44 (round 70): The decisive battle for a total victory is going on in the east. From Vologda the Wehrmacht strikes south over the Volga River to attack the strong Red Army forces east of Moscow from two sides. The victory objectives (yellow) are still far away in the east.

In the south a pincer attack on the city of Voronezh is started for the second time to cross the Don River. Another army is gathered to break through to Stalingrad. And finally the Wehrmacht is attacking Rostov. Also here most of the victory objectives are still far away in the east.
april44_russia_s.jpg
april44_russia_s.jpg (207.89 KiB) Viewed 5993 times
September 44 (round 80): The whole summer 44 the Wehrmacht tried to break the Red Army offense east of Moscow but again and again the Russians brought strong forces to the battle. Now in September 44 it looks like the way to Gorky (red) is free but in the southern part of the battlefield there is still a strong attack of the Red Army (yellow) ongoing binding many Wehrmacht divisions around Moscow. As time is running out the OKW has decided to go to offense on all frontlines even if this will lead to Panzer divisions that will be encircled and even defeated.

In the southern part of the Ostfront the Wehrmacht crossed the Don River with strong forces. In the west it is necessary to capture Lipetsk and defeat the Russian defenders before the troops can move further to the east. In the east German troops crossed the Don with the help of Bridge engineers to attack Stalingrad from the north west. The Russian defenders of Stalingrad are very deeply entrenched and it will take some time to defeat them. The Tiger division from Tunisia finally arrived at the Don and will participate in the battle of Stalingrad in the next round. In the very south Rostov was finally captured.

December 44 (round 86): Even after going to a total offense the Germans failed to make a decisive breakthrough. Again and again the Red Army is able to block the Wehrmacht with strong tank divisions (green).

Most enforcements from England and the African theater were sent to the southern part of the Ostfront giving the Wehrmacht a push to the east against tough Russian resistance. The battle of Lipetsk is still ongoing. The German Panthers try to encircle the Russian tanks. German infantry and artillery are attacking Stalingrad by all means. The city has to be taken in the next rounds to free divisions for the attack to the victory cities Saratov and Astrakhan (yellow).

Global 44
While the battle of Egypt looks to have a successful end in 45 the battle in the east does not seem to be won until summer 45. In 45 the Wehrmacht will take all risks to reach the final targets but the OKW becomes more and more desperate as only 13 rounds are left to achieve the total victory that was the goal of the whole German strategy since 1941.

The year 1945

Egypt 45

March 45 (round 91): From the west the Afrika Korps has broken the British defense line with Panther Panzers. Essential was to weaken and suppress the British anti air with Axis strategic bombers and the British artilleries with Axis tactical bombers and fighters. In the east Palestine was completely captured and the German troops are on the way to the Suez Channel.

Die Ostfront 45

March 45 (round 91): Victory against the Red Army in time seems to get away further and further. East of Moscow the Russians are defeated and the way to Gorky is free. A northern army has been build up that will try to bypass Gorky and use the road to reach the city of Kuybyshev east of the Volga River. But already a strong Red Army SU-100 anti tank division (yellow, overstrength 12) moves in the way of the German army to slow it down.

The Wehrmacht is ignoring the still strong Russian Army (yellow) south of Moscow and will send all available divisions east to reach Saratov and Astrakhan. A part of Stalingrad as captured and the rest of the city will be captured soon. The OKW rates that all victory targets in the east could be reached in time except Kuybyshev.

May 45 (round 96): With a clear air superiority the Wehrmacht is driving its offense to the Volga River. Gorky was taken. Ulyanovsk will be attacked next but the artillery and infantry could not move in the same speed as the Panzer troops. Thus Ulyanovsk has to be attacked with tactical bombers and tanks. That will take some time. Kuybyshev is out of reach for the northern armies of the Wehrmacht.

The southern German armies will capture Saratov where the Russian defenders went out of ammo. Also Astrakhan will be captured soon. On the eastern shores of the Volga River there are still strong Red Army divisions.

June 45 (round 97): Reaching Kuybyshev stands between the Wehrmacht and a total victory in this war. Several Russian divisions (yellow) successfully slow down the Germans on their way from the north. There is definitely no chance to reach and capture Kuybyshev in two rounds.

What happens if the player decides not to rush to Moscow in 1941/1942? Russians still get a hell lot of replacements?

In the instructions it says that no Victory hex should be conquered in order not to angry the Russian bear. Do normal cities count for this? (not the VP)

thanks!

Hello empedocles,
reducing the Russian prestige income as early as possible is important. Moscow and Leningrad are the two targets that are in reach in the first months. In my first AAR with V1.8 I tried different strategy focusing the invasion on the Caucasus and was overwhelmed by the high numbers of Red Army units in the second part of the war.

I am not quiet sure when the Russian bear gets angry.

But … in the south the Red Army made a disastrous move that suddenly opened the Wehrmacht a second chance to reach Kuybyshev!

The Russians moved their strong tank and anti tank forces east of Saratov (yellow) south to Stalingrad. Surprisingly this opened a gap for two Panther divisions that could reach and attack Kuybyshev in round 98. Kuybyshev is guarded by a fortress and the Panthers have a chance with three attacks to defeat the fortress.

June 45 (round 98): The Red Army generals seem to realize their fault. They close the gap east of Saratov (yellow) but too late. The two Panther divisions creeped through and are even out of range for the Russian tanks. The fortress of Kuybyshev is already reduced to power of 5 by the Panthers.

Global 45
Total victory in round 99. At the end it was very tight. In 44 the British submarines near Plymouth postponed the transport of the German divisions from England to the Ostfront for several rounds and this nearly prevented the Germans to achieve a victory in the east in time. But a fault of the Red Army in round 96 made the decision.

Well done GW. I really like your style of writing AAR. It is not only factual, but also in story writing format with characters, etc. It makes for a very interesting read.

I am currently doing my first playthrough of 1.8 and will post an AAR shortly. But it is a shadow to your excellent writing style.

Now, we just have to hope that McGuba can make a Battlefield Europe mod for PzCII!!

Well done! It is good to know that it is still possible to achieve a DV in the mod. Even though it was very, very close. :D
