Briefing avatars for custom scenario question

Post by makigono1 »

Hi folks,
After a long hiatus, I'm back, this time trying out OOB. I created my first custom 1v1 scenario, but I'm confused by something: I don't see any British or French avatars that I can choose, which, while not terribly important, is a bit annoying when setting up the briefings. I went ahead and made my own avatars and replaced a couple of the existing ones, but I don't want to submit a mod for a single scenario, to deal with an issue that isn't terribly important. I'm aware that I could do custom images for outcomes, but is there such for the briefing pictures as well?

There are briefing and event graphics for campaigns, but not for single or multiple scenarios as far as I know.
But it is a good idea that would add a bit of chrome.
There are outcome graphics for stand-alone scenarios.

Instead of replacing, I tried just adding to the end of the line, the next avatar being avatar_81.png. It seems the program is limited to just the default set and does not cycle through any additional contents of this folder.

I did find something interesting, though. As I cycled through the avatars in the editor, I counted and came up with only 78. There are 81 files in the folder. The boxed file does not come up in the cycle, for whatever reason. A developer conceit, perhaps?

The editor also skips bootcamp sarge (number 60) and naval commander (number 62). This does not help, though, in that if you were to mod these pictures, the editor will not use them. The editor must be hardcoded to pick up only 78 specific avatars in that folder.

That fury is Lieutenant Lena. Her shocking beauty is doom to every enemy's land unit!
I won't spoil here how to summon her alluring charm. :P

So is that Commodore Cutie to her right? He also does not appear in the editor. Does he figure in some other easter egg? :)

Avatar_62: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Doorman

You should have met him in Java Sea on the Dutch flagship HNLMS De Ruyter if you play the Japanese.

Very interesting, thanks. So, similar to Bootcamp Sarge and Luscious . . . I mean, Lieutenant Lena, the editor is programmed to omit this avatar. I would guess this was done because either nationality is not defined (Sarge and Lena) or not appropriate given the lack of national units in the game (Doorman).

P.S. - One of the reasons why I like this game is because it has sparked an interest in World War II history that I never experienced before. I mean, I like history and I know all of the important events of WWII, but I never delved into the details of commanders, battles, units, and equipment to this extent.

Reading about Admiral Doorman, I now know that he was a very gallant and courageous officer.

By the way, I came up with a couple avatars, of Canadian and French officers respectively, if anyone ever wants to use them. Not as good as the ones from the original game, but they work for me. Hope others might find them useful. I'm having such a hard time finding high enough quality color photos of Allied officers online that I'm thinking of resorting to using ones of famous actors playing the generals I was looking for.

Thank you very much. Not yet, but I will soon. Maybe by the weekend. Gotta work up my courage to post my first custom scenario first...
