Not really. You can tweak the various values for units though - swing over to the modding forum to partake of the wisdom offered therein.

Plus you can always dial down the difficulty if a specific map is givign you problems.

There's the "Arcade Mode" option, which might as well be a cheat code. It allows you unlimited orders, and between that and the "Normal" (translation: EASY) difficulty setting, should be enough to get you past any problem map. If that's not enogh to tip the scales in your favor, you probably need to adjust your force balance before fighting that scenario, because things are likely to get even harder for an ill-suited army as the game progresses.

I had some troubles with getting used to the fighting style employed in this game.

The battles started going my way, it seemed as I got higher ranked units.

By the end of the roman demo this was my army:

Legate - 7
2 Legionary - 7 & 11
2 Auxilia - 7 & 8
1 Auxilia Cavalry - 8
1 Velite - 6

the battles were somewhat tough, since I never recruited any more troops than this army has right now.

If the battles would give you more denari I would consider recruiting 2 more legionaries, and a couple principes.
