berlin gc45 (and redux)

Post by hugh2711 »

I am just about to do berlin in gc45 for the first time. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? (other than using the rivers). Is there a particular area/district with an aifield in it that is easier to hold?. I cant seem to find any AAR's in english. thanks for info

I am in January 1945 at the moment, 2nd time GC East. Failed Berlin the first time, BIG. Tried a fighting retreat, but was only able to damage russian units, not enough destroyed.
Remember it was hardly possible to chose one particular area to defend, because I was completely surrounded. Will try southern defense 2nd time I think.

Hi,
I have not posted Berlin yet as Goose wanted me to post a step by step play through to see how I do it. I will post it when he is ready, but basically I hold the Island with the bunker on it and the airfield immediately south with a defensive semi circle. From Memory I used 2/3 infantry, 1 bridge unit to link the island and the airbase, 12 art, 4 Flak 40, tiger and tiger II. Supported by $ Ju 87g 5 Me 262 a Me 410A and a Fw 190G oh and 2 puma's to take flags when I went on the attack as the tigers are too slow and there are too many flags, plus the reco move allows them to dart out of safety destroy a weak unit and return during the defence.

Ok looking forward as well - since I was able to play victories on all other battles, especially keen to see hints how to overcome the final battle ;-).

Millie?
Go ahead and post I will just wait to read until after I finish up the Campaign, I think I am a month or 2 away from attempting this as I am knee deep in 3 other Campaigns that I am more excited about.

How many units do you have to defend Berlin and what is their quality? That makes all the difference. I retreat between the rivers except for the SE airfield complex where I form a hedgehog type defense to protect both airfields. Don't let the Russians crowd the airfields with troops or the aircraft will not be able to fuel or will only partially fuel. It is easy to defend the rivers as the Russians come in waves to the eastern side and the western side, and then they come from the south and north in another wave. Most aircraft come in from the northeast so put all the Flak there. If you have 35-45 units you should be able to hold unless they are weakened, weak experience, or inferior unit types. Tigers, Panthers, and armored ATG's can smash the Russians on the rivers, but if you lose a city hex it is better to retreat to a new position instead of trying to attack a SMG infantry in the city. Abandon the western airfield and all the aux units as delay fodder. You'll have plenty of time to retake cities when the Russians are gone.

thanks guys. I have just tried milliethedog's strategy and it seems to do ok ...so far.... as he indicated might have a bit of a problem getting the v hexes back at the end.
it helps that i have a decent buffer of prestige and a number of king tigers since although it is on field marshall level i have always disbanded infantry se's so I have a good stock of tank se's with accumulated experience from previous dlc's

you can finish redux in few turns by sniping the generals:

- send 5 or 6 of your best overstrenghtend tanks to take down the general on the south

- overstrenghtend paratroopers to defeat the general in the city

- full air attack on the third general in the north, send all of your attack bombers and fighters on him.

Wow, how many generals are there? I have never fought a general in the city or the North ! Do they move in the Game as I have only ever found them in the same places!

Spoiler

If you look at berlin as a clock face I found them at 28 minutes past, about 15 minutes past and about 10 minutes past the hour using the bunker as the centre.

Post by AMDonline »

exactly you got them all right (there are only 3)

- the 28 minutes is south
- 15 minutes is the one in the "city" because he is sitting on a single city/village hex
- the 10 minutes is the "north".... like kinda north

i suck at writing posts, am not goose, ok?

I am in the process of planning my advance. I know where Rokossovsky and Chuikov are to be found, but where is Zhukov and what kind of unit is he using?

Zukov is an IS 2, strength 20.
Located 15.00, close to Rudersdorf (East) next to an airfield, beware AI attacks with planes and A/A.
