Auxiliary Unit Question - Buying?

Hi,

I have played this game for a long time and I guess I could read the manual again. However, I was playing the SS-GTPG mod and I was in the Sevastopol scenario during the campaign. I clicked on a couple of StugIII A's while in the middle of the battle and I was able to buy them as aux. I have never bought Aux units before during the game. How do you know when you can buy them? I was only buying core units in the game when playing.
