I've been enjoying PzC for a while and have played my way through hundreds of hours of play and the various DLC campaigns. I've now started on some of the fan-made campaigns, which has been great. Except for one thing, really: The random heroes. I'm afraid that the annoyance of a useless spotting hero on Arty, or the old '+1 defence hero slap in the face' send me to the 'load' screen, which then results in me playing the entire turn again.
This wasn't much of a problem before, as units would not level up often. However, with the current mod pack I note that the rate of hero awards seems to be greatly increased. I'm in 1942 and have several units with 3 heroes already. This means that my save-scumming has become routine and tedious.
I seem to remember looking something up here last year and seeing a tangential post about how the heroes are assigned, and the file where the radon dice roll to determine the modifier for attack and defence being mentioned. Now I can't find it. Could someone please point me to the file, so that I can fudge the Attack and Defence hero modifiers and change the d6 roll to a straight +2 Att/Def?
Failing that, can existing heroes be deleted from a unit and then free up the hero slot for another one to arrive. thus:
"I appreciate that you have a great eye for terrain and are keen on aggressive patrolling Captain, but you're in command of a 155mm battery. I am transferring you somewhere more suited to your talents."
tl;dr: Where is the 'hero random effects' file? And can I just text edit it?

Re: Help, please: Hero stat-ups file location
Update: Patience wearing thin, and I still cannot find the correct file. I have downloaded a save game editor in order just to remove unwanted heroes. However, the editor seems to be unable to open my saved games from anything less than around five maps ago! Is this a known issue with the editor? Help. :/

AFAIK, its hardcoded. One can change when the heroes appear in a simple text edit (can't remember the file, sorry) but not what type.

Yes, it's hardcoded. You can manually edit your saved game files and "fix" those heroes, but it's a bit tedious. It took me a while to decipher the location of this data.
On the other, I don't care that much about random heroes anymore. It doesn't really affect your chance of winning or losing a scenario - good tactics is all that matters

If you want to slow down your hero progress just find the gamerules.pzdat files and edit accordingly. This is how the thresholds are named:Psyx wrote: This wasn't much of a problem before, as units would not level up often. Thanks; I'll slow the process down in the manner you describe, which will help me stay sane, as currently seem to be getting one or more heroes per turn.
Can you point me in the direction of a good save game editor, as the one I downloaded appears to not like my more recent files? It's 'PzCpsSE'. When I load more recent files it's filling in all the unit types on the left box,but not presenting my forces in the central box.
Here's some more Heroes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foDOGeRFsCY

There's no other save editor for this game. The one you've mentioned is very old and indeed doesn't work very well.Psyx wrote:
