Battle of St Denis 1567 scenario

Post by Paul59 »

The battle of St Denis 1567 is now available for download. This is a battle from the French Wars of Religion that was missing from the Tercio to Salvo expansion. I have created some new unit and flag graphics to replace the originals. It's a tough job for the Huguenots to win this one, but not impossible. Historically Conde was being very ambitious in accepting battle, he was so badly outnumbered, but the Huguenot cavalry fought magnificently and caused the Catholics many casualties including their commander.

Here are the design notes;

I used Peter Sides Renaissance Battles Volume 1, Oman's history of Art of War in the Sixteenth Century and various online resources as a basis for this scenario,

1) The scenario uses Adebar's Autumn terrain.

2) The Huguenot Arquebusiers at St Ouen and Aubervilliers are in dead ground and cannot be seen by the Catholics unless they move or fire. You should move them forward into the light fortifications when the Catholics come within range. I tried to make the fortifications dead ground. but that does not seem to be possible. In the actual battle the Arquebusiers were hidden in the trenches and surprised the catholics when they opened fire.

3) Difficulty Rating; Hard.

4) Sideicons are as follows;

Huguenot; Louis, Prince of Condé, commanded the Huguenot army at St Denis.

Royalist Catholic; Anne de Montmorency, Constable of France, commanded the army at St Denis. He was mortally wounded in the battle.

Cheers

Hi Fogman,

Unfortunately, Sides does not give his sources, but he gives an OOB for both armies in DBR format. I used this as a basis, but amended it with the details from Oman, who gives his own OOB which is reasonably detailed. A contemporary tapestry of the battle gives additional detail on the names of the units involved.

Unfortunately, Oman does not cover Moncontour. I have discovered some contemporary maps of Moncontour through a Google search, they seem to give details of the armies but are a bit difficult to read.

regards
