Panzer Corps Gold Initial Video Review

Post by Omnius »

I recently purchased Panzer Corps Gold and am glad I waited to get the whole series for a mere $40 during the holiday sale. As they say patience is a virtue and I love the virtue of a great deal. Perhaps the best deal ever for a computer war game. A lot of extra content as far as campaigns and their scenarios to play. The only minor bug I found was when you move a unit that can be transported by vehicles far enough to trigger mounting up that if you decide to undo the move the unit goes back to it's original hex but doesn't properly revert back to it's dismounted state. Kind of ruins the undo move feature.

The AI, Artificial Ignorance, isn't horrible like Wars of Napoleon or the first Strategic Command but it really isn't that smart. Far too often the AI can be tricked into leaving a good defensive position to take a cheap shot at a perceived expensive unit. I read that recently the Air AI was improved but sadly it's pathetic at focusing on air superiority, wasting too much on playing flying artillery. Sadly the fighters do a poor job of escorting bombers instead of bombing early on so it's bombers never last long. Then I always focus on gaining air supremacy which the Air AI makes all too easy.

I use the Stalingrad scenario to explain game mechanics and other stuff. I love the replay feature as it allows me to quickly show a battle while I comment on the proceedings. I'll be doing other battles as well in the future.

No background music.

Welcome to this great community.

I look forward to your future reviews of this great game.

If you are ever interested in playing something a little more dynamic than an Artificial Ignorance, shoot me a message and we can dive into one of the greatest gems of this game, which is the multiplayer community.

The game was set up with several wonderful and well designed multiplayer maps that provide hours of fun with someone who can challenge even the most veteran of players.

goose_2,
Thanks for the welcome. I avoid multiplayer because my past experience has been only the best cheaters win. Plus I want to learn the ropes before I'd ever consider multiplayer. I'm old school, first learned on board war games so am going back to my roots playing solitaire. I like playing both sides solo to see who will win without worrying about which side does. I can run through turns very quickly that way, multiplayer can drag on and on waiting for a reply. For now I have a lot to learn and am taking my time going through some scenarios. I'm doing the Kursk battle solo and am making a short 2 episode AAR video.

It is a fun beer and pretzels game. Not too difficult or massive so scenarios play in a day or less.

Is there a cheat code to enable AI vs AI play? That used to be a standard feature I loved as I'd let the game play itself while I read the manual. It was most useful when creating scenarios in a scenario editor, made testing balance and AI play much more efficient. It would be very helpful for PCG.

ptje63,
I first played the France 40 and Barbarossa scenarios before Stalingrad. I'm playing and making a video of Kursk, playing it hotseat solitaire. I just played the Normandy scenario. I'm working my way through some scenarios to refresh myself with the basic Panzer General game system. I've just gotten the game so am methodically working my way towards the campaigns. Best to get a good idea of how the equipment changes over time.

I don't think playing individual scenarios first is the best way to experience the game.

You really should start with Grand Campaign DLC in '39 and just work your your way through the years.

Omnius, this bugged me until I realised you simply click the "Mount/Unmount" button and the unit is back on foot. Hope that helps, cheers.

Panzer Corps Gold contains it all
Mega Pak only contains the DLC's I think and as such you would still need a core game to play
so Gold is the way to go

Dumb question, I guess. What is a DLC?

DLC = Downloadable Content.

Add-ons to the base game which will not function as stand-alone and require your having a copy of the base game. Panzer Corps, Allied Corps, Afrika Korps, and Soviet Corps are standalone games. The U.S. Corps series, Grand Campaign series, and Sea Lion are add-ons which require the base game to run.

P.S. - Panzer Corps Gold includes all standalones and DLCs, so you get everything ever released for $20 right now (still $80 on Steam). That's an unbelievable bargain. It cost me ~$200 to get all that content over the last 5-6 years. Of course, if I'd have waited, I wouldn't have had it to enjoy all this time and, like most people in the forums, I've gotten my money's worth.

Amen to all of it. I got my stuff for a great price and was happy to get the rest as it came up and am so pleased with the whole game that I would have gladly paid $200 if I knew I would have gotten this much enjoyment out of the whole thing. ;)
