Cannot play, game does not capture mouse

Post by Jonquero »

I purchased Sanctus Reach from Steam on Friday 20th Jan and have not been able to play at all which is very frustrating and annoying.

The issue is that when the game loads to the main menu screen my mouse is not captured and the in menu mouse cursor, while on there doesn’t move, and the windows mouse cursor is shown, and when I click on anything it doesn't reach in game, it just switches to desktop

Can anyone help?

lets take a look and see what's maybe is the problem,

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

Dxdiag attached as requested

I did also send an email to your support mailbox yesterday and got an incident number of #2017012210000282, but no-response to that as yet

For your information the preview builds are for public use, it's a checkbox on any copy of Windows 10 for any member of the public with a copy to click.

I have no problems running *any* other software, including games both modern and ones multiple years old, on this version of the OS, so I would suggest that this is not the problem (unless your software does something really silly), and you are just using this as an excuse to not do any work or investigation

and also for your information, the system is using the generic Windows USB keyboard and Mouse drivers, hence the n/a rather than specific ones. If you checked the USB devices list you would see things like the following:

| | | +-+ HID-compliant mouse
| | | | | Vendor/Product ID: 0x04D9, 0xFA50
| | | | | Matching Device ID: HID_DEVICE_SYSTEM_MOUSE
| | | | | Service: mouhid
| | | | | Driver: mouhid.sys, 1/8/2017 14:43:18, 33280 bytes
| | | | | Driver: mouclass.sys, 1/8/2017 14:43:19, 56136 bytes

and

| | | +-+ HID Keyboard Device
| | | | | Vendor/Product ID: 0x04D9, 0xFA50
| | | | | Matching Device ID: HID_DEVICE_SYSTEM_KEYBOARD
| | | | | Service: kbdhid
| | | | | Driver: kbdhid.sys, 1/8/2017 14:43:18, 40960 bytes
| | | | | Driver: kbdclass.sys, 1/8/2017 14:43:18, 60232 bytes

I am now fully convinced you don't have a clue and have applied for a Steam refund. I'll be sure to post details of your response and my perception of your level of competence in every location I can find

Thanks

yes, for public use for a preview only, not for general use as in work or gaming, as no drivers are released, and they are beta products, which aren't supported i'm sorry to say, support may give you a different opinion,

please contact support[at]slitherine.co.uk

just link it to this thread,

good luck

And further proof you don't read the threads. I mentioned above I have already contacted support and gave the reference number - but had no response from them

By switching to Insider Preview builds of Windows 10, you’ll get the latest changes and features before other Windows users. However, you’ll also get new bugs. Here’s what running an Insider Preview is actually like.

Overall, we don’t recommend switching to Windows 10’s Insider Previews on your main PC, or any PC you depend on actual stability from. if you’re curious to get a glimpse of the future and provide feedback, we recommend running the Insider Previews in a virtual machine or on a secondary PC.

Insider Preview builds get you the latest Windows 10 features before they’re ready for the general public. Insider Preview builds have the latest features and changes, but they also aren’t completely stable. Microsoft releases these in-progress builds to “Windows Insiders.” These “Insiders” can test these builds and report bugs they experience and provide other feedback.

There are several different Insider “rings” to choose from: the Fast ring, the Slow ring, and the Release Preview ring. They’re called rings because builds start at the fast ring before making their way out to the slow ring.

The Fast ring will receive the most regular updates and offer the latest software. it’ll also be the least tested and the most unstable. This is the riskiest ring to choose.

Some builds will occasionally make it from the Fast ring to the Slow ring. Not every build will make it from the Fast ring to the Slow ring, as builds that reach the Slow ring are supposed to be more tested and stable. This is a safer bet, but we’ve still experienced flakiness with Slow ring builds.

There’s also now a “Release Preview” ring you can choose. This will never actually update you to a new “build” of Windows 10. Instead, it just provides early access to basic Windows updates, drivers, and updates to Microsoft applications from the Windows Store. It’s less risky, but you aren’t actually getting any access to the next build of Windows 10 Microsoft is developing.

When considering using an unstable operating system, it’s important to realize what “buggy” actually means. It doesn’t just mean that the new features don’t work properly. It means that Windows itself can have serious bugs. These bugs could make your desktop applications not work properly, or cause certain hardware not to work as expected. Windows itself may freeze or crash. Basic operating system components like the Explorer desktop shell and the Start menu may experience issues. The exact problems will depend on which build you’re running, which hardware you have in your PC, and which programs you’re using.

The level of bugginess tends to fluctuate over time. At the moment, Microsoft is working on polishing up the Anniversary Update. The Insider Preview builds seem much more stable than they did a few months ago. After the Anniversary Update launches, the Insider Preview builds will likely become buggy again, as Microsoft works on the next big update. So where you are in the release cycle matters, too.

It’s easy to opt into Insider Preview builds—you just need to toggle the option in the Settings app, choose a ring, and wait a bit for the new build to be delivered over Windows Update. Anyone can become a “Windows Insider” for free with a Microsoft account and a few clicks.

However, if you ever want to leave an Insider Preview ring, you could have some trouble. There’s no guarantee that you can downgrade from an Insider Preview ring to an older stable build. There’s a way to temporarily downgrade to a previous build if you experience a problem, but that option is temporary. You’ll often have to reinstall Windows 10 on your PC–or restore from a disk backup–if you want to go back.

This is one of the big reasons we really don’t recommend upgrading a PC you actually use to Insider Preview builds. It’s too hard to downgrade if you experience a problem.

Good Reasons to Upgrade
There are good reasons for some people to use Insider Preview builds of Windows 10, of course. You may want to test the latest builds to check for bugs and provide your feedback to Microsoft via the Feedback app. That’s what Microsoft is hoping for–lots of people to use these builds and function as a free army of quality assurance testers.

You may also want to get your hands on the latest features and changes before they reach a wider audience. That’s what we use them for here at How-To Geek, so we can look at–and write about–the latest changes in Windows 10 while they’re still in development.

If you’re a developer, you may want to test new Windows features before they become stable–for example, Microsoft’s Win32-to-UWP application converter, will officially launch with the release of the Anniversary Update.

Should you use Insider Preview builds? That’s up to you. We don’t recommend upgrading your main PC, though, or any PC you actually depend on to get things done. We’ve experimented with running Windows 10’s Insider Preview builds on our main PCs, and it didn’t work out well with the odd bugs that can crop up during Windows 10’s development.

But, if you do have a PC lying around that you don’t need for anything else, and don’t mind its software being potentially unstable, feel free to upgrade it to the Insider Preview builds if you’re curious.

Better yet, install Windows 10 in a virtual machine–for example, using VirtualBox–on your existing computer. You can then upgrade to Insider Preview builds inside that virtual machine, allowing you to play with the latest software without your computer being at risk for bugs. After all, you don’t even need a product key to install Windows 10 in that virtual machine, which is very helpful for testing.

my personal advice is,

as you have later edited your post and reply,

go to a none preview build of windows and retry the game, if it still errors, then pop back and we will help you, or at least try, or go down the route and ask steam for a refund, either way good luck and sorry i couldn't help you with your hardware / game issue/

Not sure why you've bothered to copy and paste huge portions of the Insider Preview program, I'm well aware of what it is and what the risks with it are, and judging by your inability to read a DXdiag I know a hell of a lot more about PCs and OS's than you do! (Note your average user doesn't have a hexacore CPU with 64GB RAM! or didn't you see that in the DXdiag either)

However, as everything else I have installed, and I have a lot, including games released in the last month to those released many years ago, work perfectly fine with no issues, and have done since the Insider Preview programme started (and I'm on it for a good reason), I'm pretty sure that if there is a problem that has been exposed by using an Insider preview, then it's because the program is not using standard ways of accessing relevant drivers etc, or I would expect the same issues in every other programme.

Based on your approach and attitude to immediately point the finger at something and say ha, we won't support you, and then ruin your credibility with your DXdiag "diagnostics", I went ahead and got a refund, which was a shame as the support guy who did get back to me in the end was much more helpful and came up with some useful suggestions for troubleshooting and didn't even mention the OS version....

So basically, you've lost your company a customer and potentially others when I spread the word about your ability to help

i am a volunteer moderator here, so it's not my company, and as i pointed out above, i also noted you had contacted staff support who hadn't as yet replied, once they have or had seen your report the same as me, like 99% of any site / forum or company, the same reply would have been given, beta products aren't supported, but we still point out what we find and if so how to correct it, my advice still stands, replace the beta product with a fully released version of the operating system and all drivers none beta, and full product support will be given.

as you have already said you will asking for a refund from steam and it seems your mind is already made up, and your well within your rights, regarding my post of the preview build information, that was for others to read who may not understand what it is, and why it's isn't supported by any game company i know of, and even Microsoft go a long way to point out the many reasons why not to use it for a main pc, as it's for previewing and bug finding and testing only, something your happy with that's fine, please feel free to report the post and your findings to the admin / owners and the web site and company if you feel you have been treated unfairly or if you think i have made up my own rules etc.

generic Windows USB keyboard and Mouse drivers are just that, generic, some types of hardware wont work fully in some games and software unless the correct drivers for the given hardware are used.
Hardware drivers are the software that allow your operating system to communicate with your hardware. Windows includes built-in drivers and automatically downloads new ones to make setup easier, but device manufacturers also provide their own driver packages.

The default drivers Microsoft provides are stripped down and a bit older, but they’re written by your device manufacturer — not Microsoft themselves. They’re often good enough, but sometimes you’ll want the complete package or a driver Windows can’t provide.
again a post from Microsoft support data base, from a tech, replying to users with mouse issues in windows 10...

who after each post replied with quotes

Visit your PC manufacturer's website and reinstall the latest version of hardware.
Meanwhile, report this issue through Feedback form app.
Note that this is Technical Preview version and such issues are expected.

i'm sorry you feel my ability wasn't good enough on this occasion, and i'm glad & also sad customer support from here helped you more than i could, with some useful suggestions, shame it didn't work and help you with your issue and not go ahead with the refund, where you could have enjoyed the game, sorry about that, wish you all the best in the future and hope you can stay on the forum and not look at this as something poor with the company and just keep on blaming me, as i was the point of contact you have an issue with.
