There are quite a few miniature manufacturers out there. Most are available online.
I'd recommend 15mm as a scale to start out with, both for cost and accessibility.
OldGlory 15s have FOG "starter army" sets that are worthwhile and reasonable. The challenge is that you'll be hard pressed to find pictures of them, although you can find quite a few here www.dracostandard.co.uk
I've purchased several starter armies of OG 15s at www.warweb.com and have been very happy. Plus, the customer service with warweb/grandiosity is exceptional.
Hope this helps,
Will

Try websearching for terms like "wargame figure", "miniatures".
Most manufacturers have websites, but it helps if you already know the company names.
You can also pick up painted armies on ebay and from dealers.
You are also likely to find 20 mm (1/72nd scale) plastic figures in military modelling shops and possibly toy shops. THese are probably the cheapest option.
Going to wargame trade shows is another good way.

There isnt an official set of figures (its not Flames of War or Warhammer)
So buying your figures depends on a number of things
what scale you want to play (15mm or 25mm as the most popular)
what army you want
how much effort you want to put into building and painting painting
how much you want to spend
15mm is the cheapest way of getting into games and is (probably) the most likely for you to find an opponent.
army - its up to you. Make sure you choose something you like even when you lose.
The effort and money go together in choosing your source of minis. The more detailed (and expensive figures) tend to require some construction - shields and spears generally being seperately cast.
If you want to make the effort and spend the money I would recomend Xyston (www.xyston.co.uk) or corvus belli (www.corvusbelli.com) as some of the best figures. I find that these guys are also easy to paint as they are so well cast.
At the other end of cost (but still pretty damn good) you have Gladiator (www.blackhat.co.uk) with some very good 1 piece figures and come in packs of 10 foot. Old Glory do a good range of 1 piece people (pics on my site www.dracostandard.co.uk, though you can only purchase from the US www.oldglory15s.com. The rates and postage are pretty reasonable though)
Others worth a look - Essex are probably the classic manufacturer (www.essexminiatures.co.uk) with one of the widest ranges.
Museum (www.museumminiatures.co.uk) do some good stuff.
Mirlton (www.vexillia.ltd.uk) is good too, but multi part like xyston and corvus belli
Khurasan look good with lots of new stuff - but I havent tried them out yet.
Donnington have some cool figures, but there is not really enough pics on their site
ummm
thats all I can think of right now.

If you're in the UK, you should look into:
Magister Militum
http://www.magistermilitum.com/
and also Pendraken:
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/
Mag Mil has 15mm and 10mm lines; I think Pendraken is all 10mm.
Obviously 10mm is the scale of discerning gentlemen gamers, although you'll run into a lot of those 15mm hooligans. Some people even play with 25/28mm, but they're ruffians to a man and not to be countenanced!

The best way to get a good idea of what is available in the UK (and the UK is probably the best place in the world to be a wargamer) is to go to a wargames show. There is a show roughly every fotnight somewhere in the UK. Some shows are huge and have 50 or more trade stands, others perhaps 20 or 30.
A lot depends on the scale you want to use and a lot of that depends on who your opponents are likely to be.
Finding a local games club is a good start, they will know where their armies came from and be able to help a lot.
Where are you based? I am sure we could point you at a local show and / or club.
As for figures there are loads of small companies producing wargames figures for much lower prices than Games Workshop charge for their fantasy ones. You can get everything from 2mm to 54mm scale figures but most people in the UK play with 15 or 25mm ones. 25mm is mostly now more like 28mm or about the same size as GW stuff was 10 years ago, Wargames Factory are making a range of figures in 28mm plastic to go with the FoG army books, There are at least half a dozen other companies making metal 28mm figures. You can also play 25mm games using the cheap plastic figures from Hat or Zvezda among others and in 15mm there are loads of companies many of which have already been mentioned.

Looking at the Warweb.com site, I was comparing the Xyston 15mm to the Old Glory 15mm.
Now, as I have said elsewhere, I'm real new to the world of miniatures, so maybe I'm missing something terribly obvious here, but I thought the Xyston were the inexpensive plastic minis?
Yet when I do the math on the infantry packs, I come out with a per-figure price on the Xyston that's neatly double that of the Old Glory.
What am I missing?

Xyston are among the best of the 15mm metal miniatures. They are more of a 'heroic' 15mm or about 18mm in other words.possum wrote:Looking at the Warweb.com site, I was comparing the Xyston 15mm to the Old Glory 15mm.

The new plastic figures are Wargames Factory from the US who have the FoG licence but have yet to release their first ancients figures and Wargames Foundry from the UK who don't have a licence but have done some plastic figures. Take a look at www.wargamesfactory.com for the latest news on the exciting prospects in plastic.

Thanks, Hammy, but those are 28mm
It's not a problem, the Old Glory are affordable. In fact I was pleasantly surprised at just how affordable.
I was just hoping to avoid the lead. Yes, yes, I know you're rolling your eyes, but hey, I'm a Californian. Seriously, though, if you knew how draconian the pollution laws here can be, you'd understand why we have that attitude
**edit**
Now I know what happened. I was at Xyston's homepage, and I saw that photo at the bottom, the 5th one, labelled "Preview greens of forthcoming Campanian Hoplites" but of course I didn't get the right caption. I saw green and thought it was plastic. But it's not plastic, it's modelling medium they have used to build up an existing lead mini as a prototype. Or whatever you call the thing you make the mold from

hat and a few others make plastic 20mm figures.
although most figures are metal, not all use lead anymore. you might want to check with the manufacturer to find out if their figures are lead free.
http://www.michtoy.com/ carries most of the different lines.

It doesn't look like plastics in 15mm are a practical option. I'll probably just go with Old Glory and prime them very carefully outside before bringing them into my workshop. I do have an "outdoor" area with walls around and no roof; it used to be a pool room, and works splendidly for spray-painting as there is excellent ventilation but no wind.

Nobody makes 15mm plastics as far as I am aware. There is some vague talk that wargames factory might if there was enough demand.possum wrote:It doesn't look like plastics in 15mm are a practical option. As for the vast precautions you really don't need them. The alloy the miniatures are made of has only a small ammount of lead in them, it is far closer to pewter than anything else. If exposure to lead was a problem for gamers we would have heard about it by now.

I'm sure you're totally correct, Hammy. I didn't mean to alarm anyone.hammy wrote:
