Historical Wehrmacht / SS unit name generator

Post by BHunterSEAL »

Take your Order of Battle campaign to the next level with... actual orders of battle! Well, not exactly--but this old tool may be the next-best thing: http://panzercorps.worldwar2.ro/unit_name_generator.php

Originally developed for Panzer Corps, this will automatically generate historical unit names for your army. Units are assumed to be battalion-scale and are mostly organized into regiments, which have sizes that vary by combat branch (generally following late-war Wehrmacht TOE). The tool generally uses correct titles / abbreviation schemes and as far as I can tell, the formations are all real--including a few of the more infamous 'named' SS regiments. Just select the type of unit you wish to name from the drop-down and hit "generate"--clicking multiple times will add multiple names to the list. Some examples:

[Unit type] - [Example unit name], [# of battalions per regiment]

Infantry - I/SchutzR.70, three (same for paras, mountain)
Engineer - PiBat.26, N/A (attached at divisional level)
Grenadier (analogous to OOB heavy infantry, but assumes mechanized), II/PzGrR.23, three
Recon - AufkAbt.40, N/A
Panzer- I/PzR.10, two
Artillery - I/ArtR.79, three
Anti-tank - PzjgAbt.33, N/A
Stug (tracked TD / assault gun) - StugAbt.145, N/A
Anti-air - III/FlakR.42, five (this is accurate--ranged from 4-6 based on equipment, location)

Fighter - I/JG.54, four squadrons per wing
Tac bomber - I/SG.2 (more accurately "I/StG.2" in OOB, given timeframe and unit type), three
Strat bomber - II/KG.17, four

SS Infantry (includes all named regiments, including those later mechanized or armored) - III/SS Deutschland, three
SS Mountain (these are all very specific to actual SS mountain divisions) - II/SS Michael Gaissmair, three
SS Panzer - I/SSPzR.11, two (reflects later-formed SS panzer-divisions, named regiments often kept three battalions when becoming armored)

Having a more organized roster is really helpful when deploying troops. I tend to further divide my units into 'divisions' which have a good mix of complimentary units and can be placed quickly as a group without worrying whether I forgot the arty or AT.

You can generate a list one unit at a time, or create a 'dossier' for yourself which allows you to add/remove units to a persistent roster across sessions--no login needed, the site will generate a unique 'key' (text string) which you can paste in to retrieve your data. There's a lot of additional functionality which isn't relevant to using it for OOB; definitely make sure you avoid the red 'generate Poznan roster' button if you're in Dossier mode, since it will reset you to the default Panzer Corps army makeup.

Big thanks to Dragos if he's still around, he created the tool back in 2011.

Good idea. Historical names for German units are complex cause of so many divisions.

In Panzer Corp, I always name my units according to the deeds they performed. Like one inf unit often wiped town garrisons with one pop so I name it Ghost Town Btn, and another inf always took & gave heavy casualties so I called it Tit for Tat. I had dozens of weird names also referring to their leaders like strong def or att types or high ini. I named a southeast panther 'Wholewheat Pancakes' because the color was just like wholewheat pancakes cooked to a golden brown.

My friend also playing is not good at creativity or spelling so he named his best infantry 'Asswhoppers' which sounds like they all used to be kitchen crew at Burger King and signed up together.
