Any thoughts on a Medieval Swiss army?

Post by DontFearDaReaper »

A lot of guys in my wargaming club are building armies from the Storm of Arrows book. I picked my copy up the other day and I am interested in building a Swiss army (I have a 28mm Swiss army I built for WAB but I will probably paint up a 10mm Swiss army for FoG).

Anyone play with the Swiss? I am a little worried that they might not perform well even with in-book matchups since they have no cavalry to speak of and not much in the way of shooty troops.

Thanks,
Dave

I think that the Swiss will slaughter anyone foolish (or unlucky) enough to get caught in front of them. All those superior Pk are nasty. The problem comes when your opponent figures that out and starts to bob and weave. Will you be able to force the fight?

Because the Swiss are drilled the flanks are not a huge concern, as their BGs can readily turn to face a threat. In fact, they might want to lure the enemy in to their flanks as a way to ensure that they get to fight.

As for mounted, the Swiss can take the Lorainner knights if they want to. Not sure whether that's a good idea or not.

The swiss won the 25mm competition at Britcon. Lots of superior HF with an IC makes it pretty shooty proof and pike frontally v hard with the halbardiers in support. Superior and drilled makes it very manouverable for a HF army as well.

Interestingly the Swiss army that won the Britcon 25mm contained not a single pikeman and only 8 BGs.........

Obviously the game is broken in favour of small armies

Are people actually doing 10mm in FoG?

I ask because all I'd noticed so far were 15mm and 25mm...

Obviously the rules are adaptable to any scale you like, though.

Several members of our group have 10mm armies from warmaster days (thank god they are gone) and hve converted them to FOG. they are based as 15mm and work well. in a recent turnement held at our LGS (Greathall Games) we even allowed for the 19s and the 15s to play togather aas long as the baseing workes.

10mm on 15mm bases both looks really good and works just fine. In my DBM days I saw several 10mm armies being used in 15mm tournaments. To be honest if I could magic wand all of my 15mm figures into 10mm on 15mm bases I would probably do it but the inertia of 20,000 15mm figures is not insubstantial :(

I hope you mean the rules and not the players Storky

I really like the mass look you get with the 10mm scale with two ranks of figures per stand instead of one. With all the Scot-o-philes in our club I figured someone was already building that army. I'm thinking a 10mm Swiss army would be very pretty especially with all the flags and banners in the middle of the pike formations. I wouldn't mind trotting out my 28mm stuff just to see how the Swiss play if someone else wants to trot out their old Warhamster Ancients army to fight me.

Very cool. I have a principate Roman army and a classical Indian army in addition to my interest in building a Swiss army, so I will be interested in seeing the results of this tourney. Plus ole' Storky has a Seljuk Turk army that I want to run my Indians against one of these days :P
