Hi
Just a little clarification -
I Had always thought of elephants as shock mounted
But they are not in this ruleset - is that correct.
I have them as mounted but not shock - only lance
armed are shock is this correct.
If so elephants are not very useful in the impact phase
but there ya go

Re: Elephants - shock mounted
Elephants are indeed not shock in FoG. However, any troops losing a close combat to them wind up with a -1 on their cohesion tests. And of course this applies during impact as well as melee. They also get a POA in impact against HF, MF, and any mounted troops (as well as against battle wagonsSwitzer wrote:Hi

There are plenty of troops who are good in the impact phase who are not shock troops. "Shock troops" are a specific subset of troops who are likely to charge in regardless if they are in the right mood. Being classed as "Shock" has nothing to do with effectiveness at impact although all "Shock" troops have POAs at impact most of the time.
Elephants are better than lancers at impact and also have the advantage that whenever an enemy BG fighting them loses a combat it takes a -1 on its cohesion test. Lancers only get that benefit at impact.

Re: Elephants - shock mounted
Elephants are useful against any mounted, where they are always a POA up at impact and the mounted lose 1 dice per 3 for disorder. Against most foot its usually evens.Switzer wrote:If so elephants are not very useful in the impact phase

However, if the opponent loses they get the -1 on CTs. And in melee swords and s.swords don't count, not does armour.
They're not bad. Not supertroops - but not bad. Except when you roll a 1 on the death roll...
