Multiple Commanders in a BG

Post by MkV »

If a BG in combat is eligible to rally and has a TC in the front rank. Can the CinC (IC) be moved into the BG's back rank to apply a +2 modifier instead of the TC's +1?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of generals that can be with a BG. One only uses the best modifier of all the generals that are able to impact the dice roll.

I think there is an exception to this - if a BG has two generals then each can make an attempt to rally, or bolster, the BG and each uses its own modifiers. I.e. an IC and a TC allow two attempts, one with the bonus for the IC and one without.

I don't think so, but then I haven't got my rules here.

I thought the same as you Phil - but having just checked the rules - page 110 - there appears to be nothing to prohibit multiple Commanders trying to bolster the same BG.

Unless the authors know different?

My initial thought was "don't be silly", then I read the rules......

It would appear that each commander can bolster one BG, not each BG can be bolstered. Hmm :?:

A clarification that the wording is indeed what is meant would probably be handy.

It would seem silly that a BG could attempt to be bolstered twice. If the IC fails does the TC get upgraded to IC if he enables the BG to pass, as he is obviously more inspiring than the IC, and the IC then get downgraded :?

hmmm...the authors need to state what their intention was then issue an official addendum I think. I'm sure any one BG should only have one opportunity to be bolstered per JAP.

To be honest as it means at least half the army commanders are with a single BG I don't think it is an issue myself.

I agree - I've played a few games now and the idea that someone could have the luxury of 2 Commanders trying to rally one BG has never arisen.

Having said that I have had both an IC and a TC with a BG for combat- so I'll file this one away if the IC fails to bolster from disrupted or fragged.

I just cannot see a BG rallying for a TC after failing to rally for an IC in the same phase.

Oh....I DO so want to be wrong.

Well it certainly was our intention that a BG can only attempt to rally once - but we'll discuss the implications.
as Nik says - having at least half of your commanders committed to one broken BG is somewhat of a luxury.

Then there is the following statment to consider......
"Only one commander can affect a cohesion test – count whichever gives the best modifiers."

But if each commander can try and bolster then there will be multiple cohesion tests ...
