Unit Stars

What do the unit stars mean?

Do they give me any kind of edge in combat or movement?

It doesn't feel like it.

Stars = Experience. If you hover the cursor over them you get some numbers indicating progress (for example how far to the next full star).

I'm not the best to comment on the tech/mechanics side of it, but yes, high experience units are supposed to do better in various ways (for example don't lose efficiency like green guys).
