MikeMarchant’s Gepids 15/41 (37%) beat PaulMcNeil’s Parthians 54/47 (100%)

The battlefield was awful even before the first blood was spilt. The Gepids were formed up in three blocks on a hill that stretched down to near the middle of the field. A hill covered in rough ground and broken rocks, and not the kind of terrain Gepids like to fight in.

Facing them, on the plain below, was a long line of horse archers, backed up by a long line of Parthian cataphracts. Lots and lots of cataphracts. On both flanks the Parthians had medium foot advancing through rough terrain, escorted by more cataphracts and horse archers.

The Gepids stormed down the hill as quickly as possible and managed to find good footing before contact. Both wings of the Gepid army engaged the Parthian medium foot with great caution, more concerned about protecting the Gepid flanks than engaging in full force.

The centre advanced to charge range of the Parthians then stood, giving the Parthians the responsibility for contact. At the same time, the extreme edges of the Gepid line in the centre advanced fully and through the gaps the Parthians had left on both sides of their centre, allowing them to fan out to the rear of the Parthian centre and towards the rear of each flank.

The Parthians charged and took more damage on contact than was fair, but then the Gepids came in behind, rolling up both sides of the centre at once. On the Gepid right flank progress was being made and the Parthian medium foot and escorting cataphracts were put to flight form their small rocky hill, largely due to rear charges. And on the Gepid left flank, although slower and more cautious, the Gepids swept half the Parthian forces off another, similar small hill, and held back the rest. Despite the rear charges, the Parthian centre held on longer than it ought to have done, with the Parthians fighting heroically, but they couldn't keep it up forever, and the centre eventually crumpled under the pressure of the great number of Gepid horse surrounding it.

In retrospect, the only fault I can find with the Parthian strategy, was leaving that small gap between the centre and the flanks on either side. If my horse hadn’t been able to pass through, unchallenged, to the Parthian rear, this would have been a very different story.

Bad luck, Paul, thanks for the game.

Best Wishes

Victory notjustdon Palmyran 38/46(83%) v Ironclad Principate Romans 47/47(100%)

Great game from start to finish. Neck & neck until we got to 35 each but then I just managed to deny him melee in certain areas and engage where I had more force.

Thanks for the game.

two tough armies lined up and slammed into each other...then we rolled lots of dice. wasn't pretty, but bosporans came out on top.

Ironclad P.Romans 260-284 36/47 win v IMC Later Seleucids 56/53

Terrain was significant in the battle. It consisted of a narrow plain running south-west to north-east bounded by two large areas of rough ground - to the north-west extensive woods and to the south east - an equivalent area of woods and marshes with a number of ditches along the perimeter. The Romans had deployed within the south-east rough planning to use it as a launch pad and shield but instead decided on a major redeployment to switch their Sarmatians from the right to the left (travelling through the rough behind the infantry) combined with a trek of the central heavy infantry to the north along the plain - the aim being to overwhelm the enemy on their left, and then roll up the centre, whilst distancing the army from the formidable opposing cataphracts on the southern enemy wing.

The Seleucids boldly marched to match this movement, but with interior lines the Romans reached the north in sufficient strength to destroy the outnumbered and extended enemy force that had arrived there, they also had the better of the central legions v phalanx battle winning eventually whilst in the south the Seleucids slowly gained the upper hand hindered by the rough terrain which slowed the impact of the cataphracts especially. Good battle, with its contrasting movement, terrain effects and tough fight. Thanks Ian.

Sirlancealot started a game against me. I pointed out that his army might be wrong points total as he fielded 149 point to my 46! He checked and this was the case. He has now redone his army and I have re-issued the challenge. The original game we are going to carry on with just for the sheer hell of it. So I'm outmumbered 2-1, just imagine if I win!

That will definitely qualify for the "Underdog of the Year" award.
