late macedonian cavalry

Post by Brennos »

It might be a stupid question as I'm just getting into successor history, but I'm a little surprised not to see any "lancers" in the late macedonian army list. Were there no Companions (Hetairoi) anymore, or no Agema-type heavy cavs or at least xystophoroi? I thought thessalians used the xyston, I might be wrong...
Anyway, not that important, powerful list nonetheless, just a little dull when compared to other successors... (probably as it should be)!
cheers,

Makedonian cavalry of the period of the wars with Rome are described as being surprised that the Roman cavalry charged them without first engaging in a missile exchange which was then normal. Shields also appear to have been used at this point which are not (usually) associated with the use of the xyston.

I cannot think of any source that says the Thessalians used the xyston.

Alrighty then, thank you very much for the answer!
Wouldn't the Makedonians under the Antigonids know of the shock tactics of xystophoroi from the other diadochoi? Or did such lancer cav still use missiles first? It is never clear to me how the heavy shock cavalry of the ancients would function... I come from medieval history and I'm French so you know the tactics I'm used to
Sorry to sound uninformed!
That's what I like about this game , everything has already been thought about and every decision can be defended!

PS : It is difficult to form one's opinion from ancient authors, which often contradict each other, and who don't always check their sources...Sometimes people are reported as being surprised by things they are supposed to know...

it seems that the later macedonian cavalry adopted the shield and javelins in place of the lance after pyrrhus went to italy. if you want to use lance cavalry with macedonian successors you would need to use the early successor list instead.
